Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel sign on for Girl Meets World

Those excited about the sequel to Boy Meets World have been holding their breath, hoping the actors from the original would sign on. Today, they got their wish.

Earlier this month, Disney announced it would produce a sequel to the popular ’90s TV show Boy Meets World but wasn’t quite sure if the show’s original stars would be signing on.

Today, Disney announced that Ben Savage would be joining the cast for the pilot, alongside Danielle Fishel. In the alternate universe of TV, the couple has since married and has a teenage daughter.

“Disney Channel confirms the pilot is still in ‘very early stages of development’ and that a nationwide casting search is still underway for 13-year-old Riley Matthews,” according to the Huffington Post. “Girl Meets World will follow Cory (Savage) and Topanga’s (Fishel) teen daughter Riley. Boy Meets World creator Michael Jacobs is behind the project.”

The show is also looking for a best friend to Riley, as well as a few other characters. In the new show, Cory will reportedly be a history teacher, like his mentor, Mr. Feeny, in the original.

“I’m very excited for Disney and [creator] Michael Jacobs,” William Russ, who played Cory’s dad, Alan Matthews, on the series, told the Huffington Post. “They are a great team and will produce an exceptional show, I have no doubt.”

Actor Anthony Tyler Quinn, who played Mr. Turner, threw his name into the hat of actors hoping to be included on the new show.

“If it’s done right, I think it’ll be wonderful,” he said. “I think Michael Jacobs is a great writer and producer, and I think if anybody can do it right, he’s your man…. I’m really excited it’s getting so much buzz.”

Lily Nicksay, Cory’s younger sister in some episodes of the show, also hopes to be included. She told TMZ that she’d “love to talk [to Disney] about being a part of it,” said the Huffington Post.

Only time will tell what the new show will look like, but with Savage and Fishel signing on, the two most important pieces are now in place.
