Matt Damon gay rumors: Why he’s never spoken out

by

Matt Damon gay rumors have hung around the gossip mill for years. Why not squash them once and for all? The Behind the Candelabra actor explains, and shares the helpful advice for filming he received from the late Heath Ledger.

Matt Damon has purposely sidestepped addressing rumors that he’s gay for as long as possible. Despite being married to the beautiful Luciana, with whom he has four daughters, the actor’s sexuality still comes into question — and soon the world will see him making out with Michael Douglas!

Matt Damon, who stars as Liberace’s lover Scott Thorson in HBO‘s upcoming Behind the Candelabra, recently opened up to Playboy about those pesky gay rumors, and how he geared up to film the role’s more intimate scenes.

First look: Michael Douglas as Liberace >>

“I never denied those rumors because I was offended and didn’t want to offend my friends who were gay — as if being gay were some kind of f***ing disease,” Matt Damon vented to the men’s magazine.

“It put me in a weird position in that sense. The whole thing was just gross. But look, there have been great signs of progress — the fact that Anderson Cooper and Ellen DeGeneres can come out so beautifully and powerfully, and it’s a big f***ing deal that it turns out nobody gives a s***. If Liberace were alive today, everybody would love his music and nobody would care what he did in his private life. Like with Elton John.”

As for filming love scenes with Michael Douglas, Matt Damon shared, “We both have a lot of gay friends, and we were not going to screw this up or bulls*** it. It wasn’t the most natural thing in the world to do, though.”

“Like, for one scene, I had to come out of a pool, go over to Michael, straddle him on a chaise lounge and start kissing him,” said the actor, who warns Behind the Candelabra isn’t for everyone. “And throughout the script, it’s not like I kiss him just once.”

Some old advice from a late actor helped Matt Damon get up the nerves to jump into his role as Liberace’s lover.

“I remember asking Heath Ledger after Brokeback Mountain, ‘How’d you do that scene with Jake?'” — meaning the scene where they start ferociously kissing, Damon recalled.

“He said, ‘Well, mate, I drank a half case of beer in my trailer.’ I started laughing, and he goes, ‘No, I’m serious. I needed to just go for it. If you can’t do that, you’re not making the movie.'”

In case you’re curious, Matt Damon went on to vouch of his co-star, “Michael was a wonderful kisser.”
