Ten extravagant pets you’ll want immediately

Here are the most extravagant, impractical and possibly irresponsible exotic pets that money can buy…not that we’re saying you should!

Note

These choices are just for fun! If you are really in the market for a companion, please visit your local animal shelter.

10

Chinchilla

Although chinchillas are essentially just large squirrels, they are awesome South American large squirrels with amazingly soft fur. Note to the Big Rich Atlanta ladies: Chinchillas do not do well in temperatures above 80 degrees F, so Hotlanta may not be a good home for them unless they want a fur coat.

9

Sugar glider

If you are into wearing your pet and not in the form of a fur coat, the sugar glider may be for you. These exotic pets thrive while socializing with their owners, so many owners wear them in a special pouch during the day while the animal sleeps. Accessorize, ladies!

8

Pony

A pony, or a miniature horse, is usually less than three feet tall but has all the energy and playfulness of a full-size breed. Lately they’ve made news as a great service animal for the disabled.

7

Wolf dog

A wolf dog is only an appropriate pet for a seasoned dog owner, and even then it is a good idea to purchase this pet from a trustworthy breeder that maintains a dog to wolf ratio that is far more dog than wolf. These animals can make gorgeous and striking pets.

6

Bearded dragon

I spend a great deal of energy trying to keep reptiles out of my home, but apparently some people are into cold-blooded, scaly, bug-eyed monsters as pets. And to be honest, the bearded dragon is a very striking lizard with bright coloring. Lizard experts (also known as “pet store employees”) note that the bearded dragon is a great pet for beginners.

5

Urban chicken

Owning and raising chickens is all the rage right now with hipsters, homeschoolers and hicks. How, then, is this extravagant? Separate yourself from the plebeians by purchasing a high-end chicken coop or opting for chickens with unique colors and feathering.

4

Macaw

If you’re tired of dating but don’t want to grow old alone, consider a macaw! These stunning birds live between 30 and 50 years, they can learn how to speak and they age better than most men by retaining their vibrant colors.

3

Savannah cat

A Savannah cat is a hybrid mix between a domestic breed and a Serval, a wild African cat. These cats are striking, tall, athletic and social. And unlike most cats, they make great pets.

2

Fennec fox

These tiny creatures hail from North African deserts, and although they are not domesticated animals, they usually do quite well as pets. Fennec foxes are known for their giant ears and tiny bodies which are undesirable in a human but highly desirable in an animal.

1

Pygmy goat

A pygmy goat harnesses all the innate extravagance of a goat and multiplies it by each inch it falls below the size of normal goat. It gets complicated, but basically a pygmy goat is increasingly awesome the tinier it is. Pygmy goats are usually about 30 pounds so they’re the size of a medium dog. But they’re goats. And you can milk them, if you’re into that.

But seriously, check your local laws before buying these awesome pets.
