Time travel, Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt with a prosthetic nose fought their way to our No. 1 release this week with the futuristic action thriller Looper.
1. Looper
In the near future, time travel is strictly forbidden, but if anyone could find a loophole in the system, it’d be the mob. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Joe, the hired hit man who’s been offing the competition with no qualms — that is, of course, until his future self (Bruce WIllis) becomes his next assignment.
Rotten Tomatoes — 94 percent: Fresh
2. Cosmopolis
Robert Pattinson stars in this twisted satire of American capitalism. With power, passion and predicaments, Cosmopolis is a great watch for anyone who prefers a non-Edwardian performance from Pattinson. This flick is full of sex and violence that more than make up for the hefty dialogue, and the futuristic world in which the movie is cast will keep you on your toes throughout.
Rotten Tomatoes — 65 percent: Fresh
3. Little Birds
We’re giving the No. 3 spot to a wild card this week on account of its compelling story line. Little Birds is relatable — a tale of a small-town girl with big dreams. Juno Temple plays 15-year-old Lily, who flees the stagnant Salton Sea with her best friend Alison for the excitement of Los Angeles. The adventure tests not only their loyalty but their childhood innocence. Leslie Mann also stars in this honest perspective on the pursuit of belonging.
4. The Trouble With Bliss
If you watch Dexter, you’re used to seeing Michael C. Hall as a man on a mission. This movie has him cast in an entirely new light as Morris Bliss, a worn-out 35-year-old New Yorker stuck in his apartment — and his head. He’s aspired for world travels and love, but reality never dealt him that hand. Caught between two entirely different romances, he begins — surprisingly — to figure it all out. The Trouble With Bliss also stars Lucy Liu and Peter Fonda.
Rotten Tomatoes — 29 percent: Rotten
5. The Words
Bradley Cooper finally made it as the next great American author — the only problem is, the work wasn’t his. Rory Jansen (Cooper) is a fraud, and his pursuit of stardom and the famed byline could very well cost him his heart and those he holds dear. The Words also stars Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde and Zoe Saldana.
