Why did Lena Dunham thank Chad Lowe during her Golden Globe acceptance speech? We have the answer and it’s more romantic than you might think.
Lena Dunham thanked Chad Lowe. Yes, that happened at the drunken party that is the Golden Globes. In case you missed it, the 2013 Golden Globes aired last night and just as we predicted, this Hollywood party got weirder as the night went on and alcohol flowed into lithe actresses.
And one of the strangest moments of the 2013 Golden Globes? Definitely in the top 3 was Lena Dunham’s second acceptance speech of the night for her HBO show Girls; Dunham won for Best Television Series — Comedy or Musical, and then she thanked Chad Lowe. Huh?

“It took a village to raise this very demented child and I hope everyone who was involved feels thanked every single day… I also promised myself that if I ever got this chance I would thank Chad Lowe. I’m sorry! I just promised and I promised my mom!”
The cast of Dunham’s Girls erupts in laughter and so does the audience. Did Lena Dunham just thank Chad Lowe? As in Hilary Swank‘s ex-husband? What. Just. Happened.

Dunham explained to the Golden Globes press why she thanked Lowe — apparently it was a joke meant to resolve an old wound against Lowe from Hilary Swank. (Swank forgot to thank her then-husband Chad Lowe when she won for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in Boys Don’t Cry in 2000).
PopSugar tweeted its firsthand account, “Lena Dunham on why she thanked Chad Lowe: ‘Because Hilary Swank forgot. And because I’m an a**hole…’ #GoldenGlobes press room.”
Hmm, OK. It doesn’t really make sense that Dunham would involve herself in an almost 15-year-old celebrity drama (or does it?). Lowe took the opportunity to reach out to Dunham on Twitter and a lovefest was born.
Chad tweeted, “Congrats to @lenadunham on your Golden Globe win. But, seriously? You forget to thank me?! After all we’ve been through? I’m shocked.” Lowe then said, “Dearest @lenadunham YOU COMPLETE ME”
If you’re still confused — and we were too, so don’t worry — the relationship between Chad Lowe and Lena Dunham goes way deeper than we thought: All the way back to August 2012.
Dunham and Lowe tweet each other a lot and this whole Oscar redemption move was in the works for a long time via Twitter. Lowe seemingly reached out to Dunham on Aug. 7, 2012, and tweeted, “@lenadunham What would make that whole Oscars debacle better is if you wrote it for me…(I’m a big fan) Keep up the great work!”
Dunham tweeted back, “@ichadlowe What a day-maker you are! FYI I will probably mention you if I ever receive any award at all in my lifetime (and I too am a fan).
