Save the date: The royal baby arrives in July!

After weeks of speculation, we finally have a date for the most anticipated royal birth since Prince William: Kate Middleton is due in July!

The Buzz – Kate Middleton’s Due Date Announced!
Kate Middleton’s due date is announced.

Break out the baby booties! Kate Middleton is pregnant, that much we already knew, but today officials released a crucial bit of information: The future heir to the throne is due in July!

In a short statement, St. James’s Palace said, “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in July.”

“The Duchess’s condition continues to improve since her stay in hospital last month.”

Middleton suffers from hyperemesis gravidarum, a condition which causes severe vomiting during pregnancy and is often seen in women expecting twins — but from the careful wording of the palace’s statement it is clear there is only one royal baby on the way.

And what a lucky baby indeed! For the first time in history, whether boy or girl, the child will receive the same rights and privileges as heir to the throne. Ending a centuries-long tradition of male primogeniture, a first-born girl would become third in line to the throne after her father Prince William, who still has to wait his turn after his father Prince Charles.

Last week, Queen Elizabeth issued a decree allowing all of Will and Kate’s kids to receive the formal title of prince or princess, a right previously reserved for the issue of the reigning monarchy and the Prince of Wales only.

But if the baby is a boy or girl remains to be seen, as is whether that will be made public information before the celebrated birth.

In the meantime, a spokesman for the palace said the couple is unlikely to take on any public engagements in the near future as William must return to his post with the Royal Air Force Search and Rescue Force, but added that the Duchess will likely step out again to rep the royals “in the near future.”
