The creator and star of HBO’s Girls lent her voice to Alec Baldwin’s “Here’s The Thing” podcast, and explained why she’s down on Rihanna for getting back together with Chris Brown.
Lena Dunham frowns when Rihanna posts an Instagram picture of herself with Chris Brown.
“I don’t ever want to throw stones from my glass house,” the queen of buzzy HBO show Girls says. “But I follow her on Instagram and I just think about how many little girls beyond what I could even comprehend are obsessed with Rihanna.”
With so many young, female followers, Rihanna should be more of a role model? Yes, says Dunham.
When Rihanna got back together with Brown, who famously assaulted her the night before the 2009 Grammys, and when Rihanna “posts a million pictures of them smoking marijuana together on a bed,” Dunham feels depressed. “It cracks my heart in half in a way that makes me feel like I’m 95 years old.”

Dunham isn’t alone in her distress. Celebrities from Real Housewife Taylor Armstrong to Tyra Banks to Supremes singer Mary Brown have offered Rihanna unsolicited public advice. Oprah told Extra that she had “no judgment” for the couple in 2012 — a different story from Rihanna’s 2009 Oprah appearance, soon after the altercation with Brown, when O told Rihanna, “If a man hits you once, he will hit you again. If I were your friend I would call you up and say give it some time. Get yourself some counseling.”
Millionaire Matchmaker‘s Patti Stanger bucked the tide in a People article, where she advised Rihanna to “listen to your gut” and reunite if it “feels right.” But she also cautioned the 24-year-old Barbadian singer to watch “how Chris handles pressure, jealousy and anxiety.”
