X-Games athlete Caleb Moore died Thursday, Jan. 31 after a severe snowmobile crash in Aspen, Colorado left him in critical condition. Moore was just 25 years old. He died in Colorado after his snowmobile accident during the X Games caused brain and heart injuries, including a severe concussion and bleeding of the heart.
Caleb Moore’s family released a statement to the press earlier today. “This morning, Caleb Moore passed away. He will be truly missed and never forgotten. The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for all the prayers and support they have received from all the fans, friends and family around the world that Caleb has inspired.”
ABC News reports Caleb Moore’s death is the first death of a X-Games athlete during the games in the competition’s 17-year-long run. Describing the horrific snowmobile crash, ABC News writes, “Moore went over the handlebars of the snowmobile and it came crashing down on top of him. He tumbled down on the slope for several feel before coming to a stop at the bottom, where he lay on the ground for a few minutes.” While Moore was able to walk off the course, doctors found bleeding around his heart and he underwent emergency heart surgery. ESPN reports Moore’s death is a result of a “cardiac injury [that] led to a secondary complication involving his brain.”
X Games officials released a statement on hearing the news of Caleb Moore’s death: “We are deeply saddened by Caleb Moore’s passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to his parents, Wade and Michelle, his brother Colton, and the entire Moore family. He will be remembered for his natural passion for life and his deep love for his family and friends, and he will always be an inspiration to everyone he touched in the action sports community.”
