While the family of Oscar Pistorius is celebrating his release on bail, the family of Reeva Steenkamp remains mired in grief with no idea what to believe.
The father of Reeva Steenkamp told reporters today that if Oscar Pistorius’ story is true, he might be able to forgive his daughter’s killer one day — but if not, he “must suffer.”
Barry Steenkamp told South African newspaper Beeld that he’s not sure what to believe.
“It doesn’t matter how much money he has and how good his legal team is, he will have to live with his conscience if he allows his legal team to lie for him,” he told the Afrikaans-language paper.

“But if he is telling the truth, then perhaps I can forgive him one day,” the father said. “If it didn’t happen the way he said it did, he must suffer, and he will suffer… only he knows.”
The model’s mother, June Steenkamp, said she had received a floral bouquet and card from the Pistorius family and remarked that they must be “devastated” over the situation.
“They are not to blame,” she said.

Forbidden from returning to his own home as a condition of bail, Pistorius is reportedly staying at the home of an uncle in an upmarket neighborhood of Pretoria, outside of Johannesburg.
“We are extremely thankful that Oscar is now home,” his uncle, Arnold Pistorius, said in a statement to press. “What happened has changed our lives irrevocably.”
