How to look like you have a personal makeup artist

Sure, it’d be nice to have someone around 24/7 to make you look gorgeous. But since your name isn’t exactly Kim Kardashian, you might as well learn a few tricks of the trade, right? We asked celebrity makeup artist, Julia Papworth, to spill her secrets.

Sexy skin

If there’s anything Papworth’s picked up in the biz, it’s that skin care is absolutely vital for a flawless makeup look. “After cleansing, makeup artists always start with a great moisturizer, like EmbryoLisse Lait-Crème ($16-$28),” she suggests. “Apply it to your whole face, and then move on to your eye area. You want to find a product that diminishes both dark circles and puffiness, such as Skyn Icelandic Relief Eye Cream ($45).” Because honestly, who wants to look like they haven’t slept in days? And finally, prior to applying your makeup, put on a pore minimizing skin primer. This will help smooth out your skin and make your foundation glide on much easier.

Flawless face

So maybe you don’t quite have the cash to splurge on your own personal glam squad. However, you can still invest in a quality foundation to get a fab face at home. Julia recommends Giorgio Armani Maestro Foundation ($62). “It literally feels like you have nothing on your skin, and it builds coverage flawlessly,” she says. “Apply with a pink, egg-shaped, wet Beauty Blender sponge for even application. For any blemishes or discoloration on skin, try Age Repairing Concealer from Jouer ($24). “It has a smooth texture and corrects any imperfections, while simultaneously reducing signs of stress and aging,” notes Papworth.

Chiseled cheeks

Chubby cheeks were adorable when you were a little kid, but now, of course, it’s all about those high cheekbones, or at least giving off the appearance that you have them anyway. Luckily, with makeup, they’re fairly simple to achieve. Julia advises using a combination of blush and bronzer to highlight your cheeks. “Cream blush is fantastic,” she says, “because it adds a super natural glow to your face while staying weather resistant. Make sure you apply right to your cheekbones, blending up and out. Afterward, dust a matte bronzer, such as Amazonian Clay Mineral Bronzer by Tarte ($29), on the parts of your face that would naturally be hit by the sun.”

Alluring eyes

“There’s nothing more chic than a clean eye with strong black liner and lots of lashes,” points out Papworth. “Start by filling in any sparse spots in your eyebrows with Smashbox’s Brow Tech ($25). Then, using a small angled brush, line your top lash line with MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack ($16). Curl your lashes next, and put on several layers of your favorite lengthening and volumizing mascara.” Gorgeous, girl!

Luscious lips

Pucker up, baby! According to Papworth, makeup artists love the nude lip. Why? “It complements every makeup style and really projects a natural beauty look,” she says. First, start by lining your lips with a neutral pencil in order to prolong the color, Papworth instructs. Carefully apply Rouge Dior Lip Color in Angelique Beige ($32), next. This warm, natural shade looks gorgeous with or without gloss, but if you desire some shine, Julia suggests layering a clear one over top.
