Billie Joe Armstrong opens up about years of drug abuse

For the Green Day frontman, the iHeartRadio Music Festival was his rock bottom, but it led to rehab and a fresh start for the 41-year-old.

Green Day has been in the public eye for more than 20 years now, and it had appeared last September that frontman Billie Joe Armstrong had finally had enough.

The band was invited to perform at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas, and it looked like Armstrong had a meltdown onstage. The outburst caused the band to cancel their remaining tour dates and Armstrong to check into rehab.

Fresh out of rehab, the singer decided to open up to Rolling Stone magazine about the dark days of drug abuse.

“I couldn’t predict where I was going to end up at the end of the night,” he told the magazine. “I’d wake up in a strange house on a couch. I wouldn’t remember how. It was a complete blackout.”

Armstrong also spoke of the night that started his road to recovery, back in September. He went on a rant toward the crowd.

“What the f***! I’m not f***ing Justin Bieber, you motherf***ers,” he yelled during their set, according to E! News.

Armstrong checked into rehab just two days later, but he said he doesn’t remember much from the night of the concert.

“I remember tiny things,” he said. “The next morning, I woke up. I asked [my wife] Adrienne, ‘How bad was it?’ She said, ‘It’s bad.’ I called my manager. He said, ‘You’re getting on a plane, going back to Oakland and going into rehab immediately.'”

The band is headed back out on tour this spring, and Armstrong assures he is on the mend. He sent a message to his fans on Instagram thanking them for always sticking by his side.

“I just wanted to thank you all for all the love [and] support you’ve showed for the past few months,” he wrote on Instagram. “Believe me, it hasn’t gone unnoticed and I’m eternally grateful to have such an amazing set of friends and family. I’m getting better everyday.”
