It’s Women’s History Month, so what better way to honor strong women in history than with a new film that features a strong, powerful woman? That’s exactly the type of character Angela Bassett plays in Olympus Has Fallen.
Note to would-be terrorists: Don’t mess with women — especially high-ranking women in the Secret Service.
That’s the message we’re getting from this new clip from Olympus Has Fallen. In the film — out March 22 — actress Angela Bassett plays Lynne Jacobs, a “steely, strict, and tough director of the Secret Service.”
Jacobs is known for her calm demeanor under pressure, but even her talents are tested after a group of terrorists takes over the White House and captures the president (Aaron Eckhart). She ultimately instructs a disgraced former presidential guard (Gerard Butler) to carry out a mission to save the president — and the United States as we know it.
Bassett was just the perfect person for the role, according to director Antoine Fuqua.
“I just couldn’t think of anybody else to play her role,” he said. “She has that sort of strength and intelligence to pull this off.”
The veteran actress was excited to take on the job, especially since it blazes a new trail for women.
“There’s never in the history of the United States been a female director of the Secret Service,” Bassett said. “That, in of itself, is a brave new world.”
But, are we really that far off from a woman in charge? After all, we already have some lethal female Secret Service agents protecting the country’s first African American president. Plus, a woman — Hillary Clinton — is one of the frontrunners for the 2016 presidential campaign.
Who (should) run the world? Girls — and Olympus Has Fallen proves it.
