New Beauty and the Beast remake? Is Emma Watson Belle?

Emma Watson is a wanted woman. The actress has been courted to play two famous fairytale characters. Both Disney and Warner Bros. are developing live-action versions of Beauty and the Beast. Which Belle will Watson be?

Is Emma Watson swapping out one fairytale princess for another? The Harry Potter star’s been long attached to Warner Bros. live-action Beauty and the Beast. And this week, we’ve learned Disney is moving full speed ahead with their own adaptation.

According to Deadline, the studio is looking at screenwriter Joe Ahearne to pen their film. He wrote Danny Boyle’s latest movie Trance, which is far from family-friendly. At the moment, the revamp is being called The Beast and is said to have a darker tone.

Classic fantasy tales are proving to be a major draw. We’re not shocked at Disney’s interest in Beauty and the Beast considering the success of Oz: The Great and Powerful. As of Monday, the film has grossed over $155 million worldwide.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. and director Guillermo del Toro are still developing their Beauty and the Beast with Watson as Belle. The actress was also in the running to play Cinderella for Disney opposite Cate Blanchett’s evil stepmother.

Unfortunately, Variety claims the studio couldn’t work out a deal with Watson. Kenneth Branagh’s still set to direct, but they have to find someone else to fit their glass slippers.

While we’re waiting for those films to come to fruition, Disney already has Maleficent set for July 2, 2014. The film stars Angelina Jolie as the horned villainess from Sleeping Beauty opposite Elle Fanning’s Princess Aurora.
