Battle of the flicks: Admission vs. Olympus Has Fallen

A romantic dramedy starring the hyper-neurotic Tina Fey is opening against the action-packed thriller, starring the gun-toting, mega-hottie Gerard Butler. Which one should you see? Tough call!

Admission

Tina Fey is known for playing slightly exaggerated versions of herself and her character Portia in Admission is no different. What is new, however, is her flirty love interest, played by Paul Rudd.

Fey plays the admissions director for Princeton University and Rudd plays the advocate for a unique high school kid who is desperate to get into the Ivy League school, but doesn’t have the test scores.

Rudd and Fey play well off each other, but when Portia’s secret past is revealed, she has some difficult decisions to make.

I found Tina Fey wonderful as Portia and loved watching her go deeper as an actress. Some other female critics however, don’t agree. Here’s what they thought:

Victoria Alexander of Film Festival Today said, “Tina Fey’s first big blunder.”

Joanna Langfield from The Movie Minute said, “The biggest problem with this movie is that Tina Fey didn’t write it.”

Christy Lamire from the Associated Press called it a, “major disappointment.”

Olympus Has Fallen

This fast-paced, intense action flick with get your adrenaline pumping!

Gerard Butler stars as an ex-Secret Service agent who must singlehandedly save the president and the entire country from nuclear meltdown.

Those who like the Die Hard franchise would most likely enjoy this film for its intense action sequences and wry humor. I warn you, however, that it is incredibly violent and certainly not suitable for children.

Here’s what some other gals thought:

Rebecca Murray from About.com had this to say, “It’s fun, engaging, and — to use a descriptive phrase used far too often but absolutely true in this case — a white-knuckle ride of a film.”

Paula Puig of USA Today said, “This is for those who like their political thrillers far-fetched, far-reaching and filled with pretty people.”

Rebecca Cusey of Patheos said, “If I had a pickle for every time a person went to meet his Maker in this film, I’d have a bulging full barrel.”
