Editor’s video pick: Kelly Rowland “Kisses Down Low

Kelly Rowland is out with her new video for “Kisses Down Low,” but we’re pretty sure we’ve seen something like this before.

I like Kelly Rowland.

I really do.

I think she’s classy, eccentric, sexy and fiercely empowering. Destiny’s Child fans always had their favorites, and for a while she was mine. Once the group went their separate ways, Beyoncé went on to ferociously take on the music world, and Kelly found her way too. Her singles have been so sultry and her look has been as well. “Motivation” and “Ice” have been staples on my playlist. “Kisses Down Low” from her album Talk a Good Game also has its charm, but I was looking forward to seeing how this diva was going to portray such an obviously suggestive song. Well, all you 18+ readers, she does talk a good game. But in order to keep this article G-rated, there’s only so much you can do to depict the content and still be publishable on YouTube. She still caused quite the distraction, but not in the way I wasn’t expecting.

For the first time in a long time, after watching this video, I was thinking about Beyoncé. Even though your body is amazingly envy-inducing, sorry, Kelly, I cheated on you in my mind.

Beyoncé rules the fashion world >>

I know, how dare I? The video is a gorgeous backdrop of bright colors and gorgeous makeup palettes. Kelly looks stunning, and she’s all dolled up. She’s sassy, sensual and cute all at the same time. But why was I immediately referencing “Check On It” by Beyoncé? The layout transitions reminded me of “Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child. I just felt so nostalgic that I actually went and watched those videos afterwards. It’s not a bad thing, I suppose, but while Kelly has been making strides in being her own musician separate from Destiny’s Child fame, this seems like two steps back, visually.

Even John Boone from E! Online saw what I saw, and does a screenshot by screenshot comparison using Beyoncé’s videos for “1+1,” “Video Phone” and “Countdown,” among others. But even though I think this is too much of a similarity to be just a coincidence, the worst-case scenario is just that Kelly is so in sync with her best friend that she resembles her. Any which way, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?

At the end of the day, Kelly is still a strong artist with her own voice. And this is just one music video. But readers, take a moment to watch it below, and don’t feel bad to let me know what you think! Do you see what I see?
