New artist profile: The Lylas

The Lylas’ name stands for “Love You Like a Sister” — ironic since their sibling affiliation connects them to a certain Grammy award-winning star.

Yes, you heard me, at some point in time, these four girls along with brother Bruno Mars must have been running around in diapers together.

Oh, and let’s discuss the obvious, shall we?

Jaime Kailani Bayot and Tahiti, Tiara and Presley Hernandez (which one is your favorite?!) are gorgeous. I mean almost unfairly stunning (and I thought Bruno Mars was darling with those dimples). I immediately Googled their ethnicity upon discovering them. And for all of you who were as curious as I was, this striking family is part-Filipino and part-Puerto Rican. Geez, what a combo.

Which sassy Puerto Rican protected Adele from a stage-crasher? >>

OK, fine. So they have “the look” but do they have “the voice?”

So far, they have debuted the single “Come Back.” It’s is a pleading ballad about the girl making a mistake and wanting her guy back (how different!). They may not have the range or uniqueness of Mr. Mars, however, that doesn’t automatically make them not as good, just different. Granted, I am sure they get compared enough to their brother, so I will say as a stand-alone band they do have potential.

Their voices seamlessly blend and their message may be mature, but their sound is still youthful. I detect an element of innocence that is comparable to S Club 7 or Dream — what do you think readers?

We only have one single to go from, but I predict that they’ll walk the line between pop and R&B. And if boy bands are making a comeback (One Direction, The Wanted, etc.) why not legitimate girl groups (sorry Little Mix, I’m kind of meh about you). Listen and see if you feel the same way. I am definitely looking forward to hearing what else they have in store!

Oh, and by the way, if you want to catch a glimpse of these ladies interacting with each other, they are also set to star in a docu-series filming in Hawaii. It will be on WE tv this fall. While I’ll leave you now to continue to gawk at their interviews, I’ve posted one for your viewing pleasure below. I personally love the part where they discuss their beginnings as a group stemming from a performance for charity! Noble, gorgeous, and talented?! I’m sold. Enjoy!
