Jim Carrey‘s Funny or Die anti-gun video has attracted a very unusual form of protest: Sellers of Carrey gear on eBay modify their ads and vow to buy guns with the proceeds of their sales.
Gun fans are ticked off with Jim Carrey, whose Funny or Die spoof video mocked gun owners, Second Amendment advocates and former NRA prez Charlton Heston. Carrey probably expected that. What he didn’t expect was the way they went about protesting.
The first eBay wit was a user called “astrobuzz,” The Hollywood Reporter writes, who put his aim right in the title of his sale, listing a “Jim Carrey Autographed 8X10 Photo So I Can Afford a Gun!”
Similar photos, The Hollywood Reporter noted, sold for about $8 on eBay; astrobuzz’s ad attracted more than 100 bidders and the price went up to $860.
Dumb and Dumber set for dumbest sequel >>
Several other eBay sellers followed in astrobuzz’s path, The Hollywood Reporter uncovered. One user, “morpheus_2080” offered a Carrey photo and a Dumb and Dumber DVD for $50, with an image of the gun morpheus_2080 intended to buy with the money. “Some eBayers were promising to join the NRA with money they get for their Carrey collectibles, and some promised to pursue classes and apply for a concealed-carry permit,” wrote The Hollywood Reporter.
Then eBay must have swooped in: On Wednesday, astrobuzz’s photo ad read, “I’m selling this Jim Carrey autographed B&W photo (mint condition) for purposes I cannot explain because it might be against eBay’s Terms & Conditions.”
At the same time, references to guns disappeared from the other ads, too.

The astrobuzz ad had become something of a forum for gun fans; The Hollywood Reporter quotes some of the invective there: “In the hopes Carrey will see this: I will NOT be seeing KICK-ASS 2 when it is released,” one user wrote, while another wrote, “I would just like to encourage the winning bidder in this noble cause to bring the prize to the range for proper disposal.”
However, the astrobuzz ad, and all its comments, disappeared before Thursday morning.
As of Friday, there was plenty of Jim Carrey swag for sale on eBay, but no references to guns on their pages. morpheus_2080’s ad says, “I’m selling this Jim Carrey Autographed Photo Reprint and a Dumb and Dumber DVD for purposes I cannot explain because it might be against eBay’s ‘Terms & Conditions.'”
The going price for the DVD and photo? $1,500.
