2013 Tony nominations get Kinky

Spring is here and that means it’s time for the 2013 Tony nominations. This year, Broadway was all about Kinky Boots, which received the most nods. It was closely followed by Matilda, Pippin and the classic, Cinderella.

The 2013 Tony Award nominees have been announced. Leading the pack is Kinky Boots, a musical based on the 2005 film of the same name. It’s a co-production between stage veteran Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper — yes, that Cyndi Lauper. Boots earned an impressive 13 nominations.

Hot on its tail is Matilda, which scored 12 nods, followed by Pippin with 10 and Rodgers + Hammerstein’sCinderella with 9. Meanwhile, Tom Hanks was nominated for best actor in a play for Lucky Guy. It looks like someone’s aiming for an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) with his debut Broadway role.
