Battle of the flicks: Now You See Me vs. After Earth

Will and Jaden Smith star again as father and son in a sci-fi flick that opens against a magical heist movie this weekend, starring Isla Fisher and Jesse Eisenberg. One has a futuristic earth, the other is full of deception. Which one wins movie of the week? Tough call!

Now You See Me

Sleight of hand meets mega millions when a group of magicians nicknamed “The Four Horsemen” (Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Jesse Eisenberg, and Woody Harrelson) decide to pull off a heist so big, you won’t notice that rabbit in Dave Franco’s hat.

When arch rivals Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine) and Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman) roll up with more tricks in their sleeves, things get a lot more complicated for our Horsemen.

The tricks keep you on the edge of your seat and are modern enough that we haven’t seen them before.

See what some other ladies thought:

Lisa Elin of WeGotThisCovered.com said, “The Prestige wrapped in slick Italian Job styling, Now You See Me offers a glitzy caper flick that quite literally challenges us to keep up. Whether you enjoy trying to figure out how the trick is done or simply prefer to bask in its glorious effect, if magic intrigues you even a little, you’re in for a treat.

Stephanie Merry of The Washington Post said, “The bulk of movies in theaters this time of year promise action-packed visual splendor without requiring much brain power. “Now You See Me” purports to be something more, offering the former inside of a cinematic cryptogram. Now that would have been a neat trick.”

Moira MacDonald of The Seattle Times said, “Now You See Me zips by, smoothly and pleasantly thanks to that star-studded cast and the slick cinematography, but it’s hard to get too attached to it. Now you see it, now you don’t, now you stop thinking about it. Like magic.

After Earth

Real-life father and son team probably could have made any movie they wanted. It’s a tad baffling to know why they made this one, other than to set up young Jaden with a career as an action star. And it might have worked had the movie included any interesting action.

Instead, the film wastes time with redundant narration and father and son squabbles. Not the movie we signed up for.

After Earth delivers very little in the way of futuristic excitement. OK, so Jaden’s costume is made of “smart fabric” and changes color when he’s in danger, so I guess there’s that.

Here’s what some other gals thought:

Rebecca Murray of About.com said, “Whatever budget was spent on After Earth did not go into the effects.”

Betsey Sharkey of The Los Angeles Times said, “The sci-fi action-adventure starring Will Smith and Son Jaden is a disaster.”

Manohla Dargis of The New York Times said, “Mr. Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, are producers on “After Earth,” which suggests that there was no one on the production who could really say no to him.”
