Why Kevin Costner Really Left Yellowstone & What He Said About His Sudden Exit

After seeing the fate of John Dutton in Yellowstone’s season 5B premiere, fans might want to know the truth behind why Kevin Costner left Yellowstone.

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Yellowstone season 5, part 2 (find out how to stream here!)

The Paramount Network hit show premiered the second part of its fifth season on Sunday, Nov. 10 and though fans likely knew in advance that Costner’s character, the show’s legendary John Dutton, was not going to be in this season, no one could have predicted his fate.

The show opens with a rapid reveal that John Dutton is dead as the result of an apparent suicide while he waited to face an impeachment tribunal set up by his son Jamie (Wes Bentley), the Montana attorney general. While the family struggles to believe that John would have ended his own life, the show sets up a mystery for the back half of the season — who killed John Dutton?

Thus ends the storyline of the show’s biggest name. The storyline itself was kept a total secret, even from some of the Yellowstone cast and crew, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, fans have known for months that Costner’s relationship with series writer and co-creator Taylor Sheridan had hit the point of no return.

So, what exactly happened? Why did Costner leave Yellowstone? And, what has he said about a return?
