Fans of The Way Home know that the show’s season 3 has been nothing but mind-boggling. In addition to some major plot twists and cliffhangers at the end of every episode, the mysteries involving their family’s time travel have only gotten more and more complicated.
Luckily, stars of the show Chyler Leigh and Sadie Laflamme-Snow, who play mother-daughter duo Kat and Alice on the show, revealed it will all be well worth it for fans. “We were a blubbering mess,” Laflamme-Snow told SheKnows of her initial reaction to reading the finale’s script. “Everyone was at the table throwing Kleenex boxes at me and I was inconsolable.”
Leigh, who had to get some things explained by her co-star Evan Williams (Elliot on the show), couldn’t agree more. “I’m telling you, if you’ve ever been affected by an episode up until now, you have not like you will be,” she says.
Ahead of the finale, we’re looking back at all the biggest moments and bombshells from this season. Walk back with us by scrolling below or find our in-depth recaps of each episode right here:
Episode 1: Jacob Returns Home
Season 3, episode 1 started us off with a bang with adult Jacob (Spencer MacPherson) returning to his home in the present with Kat’s help.
After an emotional reunion with Del (Andie MacDowell), her family told her the truth about the pond for the very first time. “The pond isn’t just the pond,” Kat tells her mom, passing him his handwritten life story from Elijah (Stuart Hughes), “This is Jacob’s story.”
Also in this episode, Kat chooses to be with Elliot. “I choose you,” she says, taking him in her arms. “I choose here and now.” She later turns down Thomas Coyle (Kris Holden-Ried), a sign that things were steadier than ever between her and Elliot.
Episode 2: Del & Colton Meet for the First Time
In episode 2, both Alice and Kat head back in time to 1974, when Colton and Del (played by Jordan Doww and Julia Tomasone) are just teens.
When Alice joins him and his friends at the beach, viewers learn that Colton had a will-they-won’t-they dynamic of his own with Evelyn (Devin Cecchetto).
“They’ve had their own language since childhood,” Rick (Mark Ballantyne)
tells Alice. “They may not see it yet but we all know they’ll end up together.”Also at the party, we see teenage Del and Colton meeting for the very first time. And while there’s some disagreement there at first, their connection is undeniable.
Also in this episode, Kat releases Susanna’s (Watson Rose) book about the story of Port Haven. At the party, a surprise appearance by Louis Goodwin (Philip Riccio) stirs some drama with Jacob.
Episode 3: The Landry & Augustine Feud Begins
At the end of episode 2, we find out that Colton’s best friend Rick died in a car crash following the beach party at the cove. And, in episode 3, we get to know what happened to his youngest brother, and Elliot’s father, Vic.
In the 70s, young Vic (Grayson Gallanders) is cursing Colton’s name and blaming him for the death of his brother. “I hate you, Colton Landry!” Vic screams. “You should’ve been there, it should’ve been you instead!”
In the present, Vic (James Gallanders) confronts his son over the family ring he wants to give his new girlfriend. “That ring is mine,” he replies. “And you weren’t using it, not according to your ex-wife.”
Also in this episode, Del reveals to her family that she’s been seeing Sam (Rob Stewart) and she stands up to Vic at the farmer’s market. “Leave my family alone, you ruined my chance to make amends with my daughter all those years ago and you have failed over and over again to be the father Elliot deserves,” she says. “But despite that, he’s turned into one of the finest young men that I have ever known.”
Talk about a mic-drop moment!
Episode 4: Jacob Is Haunted By His Past
Since the first episode of the season, Jacob has been trying to rebuild his life in the present. But when he’s invited to visit Lingermore to meet with Louis Goodwin in episode 4, he can’t shake his past with Cyrus (Tim Post).
Before responding if he’d take Louis’ offer to work in his new vineyard, Jacob flees and leaves Del full of questions.
“It was Cyrus, he didn’t just imprison me. He tortured me,” Jacob then says of his mom. “I would’ve died but Kat, she saved my life. Her and Susanna nursed me back to health. That’s how I got these scars, that’s what I’m still dealing with.”
“I know you want me to stand on my own but I am struggling,” Jacob says between tears. “The scars might’ve happened 200 years ago but for me, it’s only been nine months.”
Del then swallows her tears and supports her son. “You’re not broken Jacob, and you will heal and I’ll be here to help you, okay?” she says.
Also in this episode, viewers see Del and Colton go on their very first date. Colton invites Del to ride on his boat but after she gets seasick, things take a turn. But then Colton whips out his guitar and sings to her. They’re officially in love!
Episode 5: Emma Returns
One of the most surprising moments of episode 5 was the return of Elliot’s ex-wife, Emma (Miranda Miller).
“I really am sorry to just show up unannounced but my tour stop in St. John got suddenly extended,” she says. After reminiscing about her and Elliot’s brief marriage together, she joins them for lunch and is invited to Del’s birthday party later that day.
During it, she brings in Alice to perform a song from Jasper’s Port Haven history book. In the song, Alice sings about a witch being in danger. “Witches were hung for stealing the sun and hung by the light of the moon,” she sings. “When the hanging rope tightened, the witch did not look frightened, for the night went as dark as our tomb.”
After the performance, Kat and Jacob decide that they must go back to protect Susanna. “I think we have to go back, Kat,” Jacob says. “I think you both are overreacting,” Elliot says. “Or Susanna is in danger,” Kat adds.
Also in the episode, Alice and Del have an argument for the first time when Alice reveals that Evelyn was in love with Colton when they first started dating.
“What do you want me to feel Alice, guilty?” Del responds. “And what, do you think I only thought about myself that summer? Well maybe I did, and maybe I got the happily ever after for as long as I could. But isn’t that allowed?”
“Don’t try to make me feel guilty about what Colton and I had,” she says before storming off. “Stay out of my memories.”
Episode 6: Kat ‘Steals the Moon’
After feeling compelled to save Susanna, Jacob and Kat jump in the pond in episode 6 and arrive at her wedding with Cyrus in 1816. But as they try to interfere with the occasion, Kat ends up taking the blame for the unusual weather and gets arrested alongside Jacob and Thomas.
But as they’re about to face their death, Kat remembers the lyrics from the song. “Listen to me, if you hang us tonight, I will not only have stolen your sun, but I will take the moon along with me leaving you in darkness and cold forever,” Kat tells the town. Coincidentally that’s when a solar eclipse begins to happen.
“I demand to be released, now!” she continued. “And only when I and my friends are free, will I allow the moon to return.”
With Susanna’s help, they’re let go and Cyrus agrees to a truce with Kat.
When Kat and Jacob are about to head back to the present, Kat comes clean about Colton’s car crash. “Dad died in an accident in his truck, but I was there, from the future,” Kat says. “I did everything I could to stop it from happening but I caused it. It was my fault.” Jacob then lets go of her hand and lets her fall in the water.
Also in this episode, Emma has a heart-to-heart with Elliot about their marriage and ends up kissing him. They don’t share a passionate kiss, but Elliot surely kisses her back before stopping it.
Episode 7: Colton & Casey Are Revealed to Be Time-Travelers
After so much build-up throughout the season, episode 7 was full of bombshells.
To get us started, Casey makes a surprise return and admits that they had been lying about their past.
“[I lied about] being Louis’ kid yeah, but I really am a Goodwin,” they explained. “Louis is actually my second cousin. I lied because things were really bad for me at home last summer. I ran away from home.”
“Last summer was the worst one of my life, but then I met you and that internship was so much more to me than a job, Kat. You made me feel like family,” they continued. “That’s why I’m back now, I wanted to come and say thank you.”
Later on in the episode, when Alice asked one-too-many questions about their ring, Casey ran away and right into the pond. Just like a Landry time traveler would!
Speaking of, the episode ended with quite a critical moment when Jacob recognized teen Colton. “It’s him, that’s the boy from the farm, 1814,” he says. “He’s the one who told us what to plant, the potatoes and rye. That boy was Dad.”
Also in this episode, Kat and Del make amends over Colton’s accident. “Alice was there, you didn’t have a choice,” Del told her daughter. “I would’ve done the same thing, I wouldn’t have hesitated had it been you.”
Episode 8: Colton Saves the Day
As the season approaches the end, viewers are finally seeing some answers coming to light. In episode 8, we get to see a surprised Colton visiting 1814 and being the person who suggested to Jacob and Susanna to plant rye and potatoes.
Then, later on, when Elijah, Jacob and Kat are fighting back against Cyrus and the townspeople, Colton reappears again and saves Elijah from his home’s roaring flames. “It’s all my fault,” Colton says before running away.
Also in this episode, Kat comes clean to Elliot about her on-and-off relationship with Thomas. “Something is broken here, and I don’t know how we fix it,” Kat says about their relationship. “And I wish we didn’t have to try so hard to make this work.”
“Maybe that’s our answer then,” Elliot says, before storming off.
