At long last, Game of Thrones’ final season premieres on April 14. And not a moment too soon, either — it’s been so long since a new episode aired that we were starting to turn into White Walkers. Plus, we have questions. So many questions. Knowing there will be no more seasons after this one has only fueled our obsessive GoT tendencies, leaving us to lie awake at night pondering how the series intends to tie up all of its loose ends.
Granted, we’re realists. There’s surely no way GoT could possibly wrap up every loose end, right? The teaser trailer for season eight alone left us with wild theories aplenty. Still, this is one epic saga that must come to a close, so at least some sort of resolution is on the way.
While it was difficult to narrow down (because let’s be real, that would take another eight years to sort through), here are the 12 most pressing questions we need answered in GoT’s final season.
How Will Jon & Daenerys React When They Learn the Truth?
You know, the truth — the fact that, despite their very recent bout of boat sex, Jon Snow and Daenerys are related. In a perfect world, these two beautiful beings would have found each other and ruled the throne together. In the deeply flawed world that is GoT, they did… only for fans to find out she is actually his aunt. Blech. So, where do we go from here? What happens when these two show up at Winterfell and learn that they’re related?
Is Cersei Really Pregnant?
By now it’s pretty clear that there isn’t anything Cersei won’t do for her children. She’s proven that in the most brutal and often ruthless ways. So, we were a little surprised to see her drinking what appears to be alcohol in the season eight trailer. Surely she wouldn’t risk her unborn baby (her refusal to drink was how we found out she was pregnant in the first place). It seems unlikely she just decided to be an unfeeling mother all of a sudden. So, what? Did she lose the baby? Or was she ever pregnant at all? If not, why did she lie?
Does Gendry Get a Happy Ending?
There aren’t too many characters in GoT that can be described as sweet. But rascally blacksmith Gendry became a fan favorite for that very reason. And since the skilled blacksmith seems to be the only living heir to the Baratheon line in Westeros, it would make sense for him to play a large part in the series. Alas, before the season eight trailer, Gendry’s fate was unclear. Now that we at least know he’s alive, what does that mean for him? Given his close relationship with Arya, could they form an alliance? Could they wind up together-together? If nothing else, we’re hoping for the latter. Feel free to join our Gendry fan club anytime. We’re thinking about making buttons.
Are Tormund and Beric Dead?
Judging by the season eight trailer, it would seem that at least Tormund survived the wall coming down in season seven. And hooray for that, because we definitely didn’t want to waltz into the final season knowing that Tormund wouldn’t be on our screens.
Where Is Yara?
She was kidnapped by Euron. That much is clear. However, season seven offered little else regarding Yara’s whereabouts or even whether she’s alive. The Ironborn basically told Theon he should abandon hope of his sister’s return, but c’mon. There’s no way they send her off so unceremoniously! What feels more likely is that Theon will come to his little sister’s rescue. He hasn’t always been a good guy, but he has come a long way. This could be his ultimate redemption.
Why Was Viserion’s Breath So Powerful? And Blue?
It’s (sort of) our understanding that Viserion’s breath is blue because the Night King killed him, therefore turning him into a zombie dragon. Or an ice dragon. Or a White Flying-Dragon Walker. We’re not sure about the terminology, so file that under Viserion questions we still need answered. Also on that list? How in the heck Viserion’s newly-blue breath could burn down a nearly 10,000 year-old wall protected by magical enchantment. Is it, like, super-powered?
What’s Up with Azor Ahai?
There’s this huge legend involving a prophet named Azor Ahai, which basically involves a hero reborn and Cersei being strangled. But there are so many prophecies and visions in GoT, it’s hard to filter the real from the imaginary. That makes everything about Azor Ahai more mysterious. Will they be in season eight? Will a hero reborn in fact emerge? Does Cersei die in the way that has been foretold?
Who’ll Emerge Victorious at the Battle of Winterfell?
We already know this battle will be waged, and we know it will be waged midseason. And we all know what that means — a few more of our favorite characters will probably fall. As for who will die and who will win, that remains to be seen.
Where Did Jaime Go? And Will He Really Move On from Cersei?
Jaime Lannister is such a snack that we’ve always been conflicted over his character. On the one hand, we love any scene with him in it for the simple fact that he’s in it. On the other hand, half of those scenes seem to involve him having sex with his twin sister, the evil Queen Cersei. It’s problematic, to say the least. Thankfully, he finally grew a pair and left his murderous sister behind. Or did he? Like, will he really? She’s certainly proven a difficult habit to break for him.
For now, though, he’s gone. We just don’t know where. Presumably he’s headed to Winterfell, which gives us another spark of hope — might he be headed into the arms of Brienne of Tarth? These two have been fighting their feelings since season three, and we are R-E-A-D-Y for them to at least give it a shot (before it’s too late).
WTF Was Tyrion Doing Creeping Around the Boat?
From the outside looking in, it almost seemed like Tyrion was being a total Peeping Tom as Jon and Daenerys had sex on the boat in season seven. It didn’t really feel pervy, though, so what was with him lingering covertly? Director Jeremy Podeswa at least attempted to address this puzzling moment, telling the Daily Beast that Tryion was just worried about the implications of this dalliance.
“So I think the worry for [Tyrion] is that now, everything is up for grabs. We don’t really know who’s going to side with who, what’s gonna happen at the end of the day, and which alliances are going to be the strongest,” said Podeswa. Interesting. And here we thought it could be romantic jealousy.
Can We Have More Direwolves? Pretty Please?
There is so much darkness in GoT, and so much brutality and gore. The tradeoff should be that the direwolves make a comeback. In the early seasons, they were one of the most iconic things about the series. Now, only Ghost and Nymeria remain. Considering there is a huge battle afoot, there’s no time like the present for the direwolves to return and offer their protection.
Who Will Be Left Standing at the End?
No one has ever really been safe on GoT. In the history of the show, fans have endured the deaths of many favorite characters. Now that the show is coming to an end, will HBO go no-holds-barred? Will the big battle of the season be an apocalyptic blood bath? After all this time wondering who’ll secure the throne, will it be a moot point because everyone kills everyone else? We’re already bracing ourselves for the worst case scenario. However, until the bitter end, we’ll continue to ponder who’ll win the throne.
