With summer winding down to a close (sob), we’re giving in and getting ready for fall. That means pumpkin spice, pulling those sweaters out of storage and, oh yes — the best movies and TV shows for fall 2019. Between returning series, brand-new series and big-screen fall releases, there’s a lot of exciting content to watch these coming months. And because there’s so much, we’ve narrowed down this list to titles we’re especially excited for (AKA only the best).
This fall, a lot of our favorite celebs are breaking into types of content they’ve never tried before — or at least, not in the past few decades. Netflix’s The Morning Show has A-listers Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell heading up the cast, and Living With Yourself has not one, but two Paul Rudds. Kelly Clarkson is getting her own talk show, Gwyneth Paltrow is back on TV in The Politician, and star-studded Hustlers is coming to theaters in early September (the cast includes Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Julia Stiles, Lili Reinhart, Cardi B and Lizzo — to name a few). With this kind of star power, it’s hard to imagine our fall viewing line-up being anything other than non-stop fun.
Here are all the movies and TV shows we recommend you watch this fall.

‘This Is Us’ Season 4
Release Date: September 24, 2019
It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for this season of This Is Us, but that’s typical for the tearjerking NBC drama. Every episode leaves you with a tantalizing cliffhanger, and the Season 3 finale was no exception. Season 4 is set to include new developments about Toby and Kate’s relationship, new cast members and a closer look at Rebecca’s father. Can’t wait!
‘Modern Family’ Season 11
Release Date: September 25, 2019
After a staggeringly successful 10-season run, Modern Family is finally entering its final season. Season 10 saw a lot of big shake-ups, with Haley’s pregnancy and DeDe’s death. We can only assume they’ll keep the twists and turns coming in their final season — and figure out a way to say goodbye.

Between this show’s bonkers premise and its kickass cast, we’re truly counting down the days until it airs. When Julia Bechley (played by the iconic Brittany Snow) finds out that her fertility doctor dad has been using his sperm to conceive 100+ children, her world — obviously — turns upside down. Bechley finds two new sisters out in the world, and these three women form a unique bond that helps prepare them for what comes next.
If there’s any remaining doubt that this show will bring the drama, know that Desperate Housewives alum Annie Weisman is the writer and showrunner behind it.
‘Joker’
Release Date: October 4, 2019
This long-awaited Joker film stars Robert DeNiro and Joaquin Phoenix, with Hangover director Todd Phillips at the helm. While Heath Ledger’s version of the Joker was iconic, this film will explore the Joker’s origin story — and from sneak peeks we’ve seen, Phoenix appears to be taking a slightly more terrifying approach.
‘Looking For Alaska’

Looking For Alaska will premiere this fall on Hulu, and is based on a book of the same name by John Green. When Miles starts at boarding school, he meets an intriguing fellow student named Alaska. The relationships — and mystery, and adventure — that follow will change Miles forever.
‘Living With Yourself’

Queen Olivia Colman is taking the lead in The Crown Season 3, one of Netflix’s most hotly awaited fall TV debuts. Oscar- and Emmy-award winning Colman will be joined by Helena Bonham Carter and Tobias Menzies, and will chronicle the 1960s.
‘Bombshell’
Release Date: December 20, 2019
All right, so this may not exactly be a fall release — but we’re so excited for Bombshell that we had to include it. Starring Nicole Kidman as Gretchen Carlson, Charlize Theron as Megyn Kelly and Margot Robbie as a fictionalized Kayla Pospisil, this semi-biographical drama takes on the Roger Ailes scandal and toxic culture of Fox News.
‘Little Women’
Release Date: December 25, 2019
Again, yes — this is a winter movie. But this Greta Gerwig-led adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel has been on our radar for what feels like a decade. Little Women stars Meryl Streep, Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Laura Dern and more. This classic tale of the four March sisters is set to be brought to the big screen like never before, and we truly cannot wait.
