Lately, our idea of a movie night has been little more than plopping down on the couch and powering up Netflix. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Movie nights used to be one of the most exciting things you could do at home — and now that we’re all stuck here, why not bring back the magic of an old-school movie night complete with a Redbox rental? Redbox is offering all the best movies of 2019 on demand so we can get nostalgic with our favorite rental service without violating stay-at-home orders. If we can’t go to the movies, why not bring the movies to us?
With the selection of movies available to rent on Redbox right now, it won’t be a stretch to feel like you’re in a movie theater. Their library is packed with the biggest blockbusters (and all the Oscar contenders) of the past year, movies that were made to see in a setting where you can really appreciate them. You might not be able to totally recreate the good old days of racing to your local grocery stores to return your Redbox DVD by the 9 p.m. cutoff, but a few small touches can go a long way in making your movie night feel special.
Some suggestions? Popcorn is mandatory (movie theater butter preferred), gather your softest couch cushions and/or blankets, dim the lights, and make it a double feature. Here are our top picks to rent on Redbox this month to give you the movie night you deserve.
‘Knives Out’
Daniel Craig stars as Benoit Blanc, an expert detective with a thick Southern drawl, in this classic who-dun-it with a stacked cast and lots of laughs. Ana de Armas is utterly charming as the caretaker of a murdered patriarch, whose rich family is now scrambling over what he left behind.
‘Little Women’
Greta Gerwig’s Little Women brought Louisa May Alcott’s story of the March family back to life in vivid color, adding a modern touch to Jo’s (Saoirse Ronan) romantic storyline and giving new depth to the frustrating Amy (Florence Pugh).
‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’
Tom Hanks is pitch-perfect as Mr. Rogers, who slowly charms an initially skeptical journalist (Matthew Rhys).
‘Jojo Rabbit’
A comedy about Hitler shouldn’t work, but this one somehow does. Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) is a young boy enrolled in Hitler Youth who talks to his imaginary friend, Hitler, and slowly comes to question his beliefs as he befriends a Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie).
‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’
Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood features Leonardo DiCaprio as a big-shot Hollywood star in 1969. Brad Pitt plays his stunt double, Margot Robbie plays Sharon Tate, and the whole movie is described as a “love letter to Old Hollywood.” Oh: and there’s a really big twist.
‘Bombshell’
Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie star in this drama about the Roger Ailes takedown at Fox, portraying Megyn Kelly, Gretchen Carlson, and a third Fox staffer who experiences Ailes’ harassment first-hand. Their depiction of the Fox workplace will hit home for women everywhere in this unlikely tale of women bonding together as a last resort.
‘Ford v. Ferrari’
Matt Damon and Christian Bale lead this automotive drama set in the ’60s, when Ford Motor Co. was trying to build a car faster than Enzo Ferrari’s race cars.
‘Uncut Gems’
Adam Sandler stars in Uncut Gems, a gambling drama about an NYC jeweller putting it all on the line to get the biggest score of his life. This movie is intense, and it might be Sandler’s best performance of all time.
‘Last Christmas’
It may not be the holiday season, but we all could use some cheer. This perfectly charming rom-com stars Emilia Clarke, who plays a Christmas elf year round, and Henry Golding, a handsome suitor come to whisk her off her feet.
‘Cats’
The 2019 adaptation of the musical Cats, starring James Corden, Judy Dench, Ian McKellen, and many, many more stars, was widely mocked — and then became a cult fave. Is it necessarily “good”? No. But it’s definitely worth a watch.
‘Charlie’s Angels’
Elizabeth Banks’ new and improved Charlie’s Angels didn’t get the attention it deserved at the box office, but we can’t think of a better Friday night flick. The Angels train a new member, uncover a betrayal, and generally kick some ass. It’s great.
‘The Lion King’
Even before they added Beyoncé’s voice, everyone loved The Lion King. This live-action remake is stunning to look at, and amps up your favorite Disney songs like you’ve never heard them.
‘1917’
Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Andrew Scott star in this Oscar-nominated WWI epic. You’ll be on the edge of your seat in this chillingly real depiction of soldiers’ lives.
‘Harriet’
Cynthia Erivo gives a stunning performance as Harriet Tubman in this moving biopic about the liberation of slaves through the Underground Railroad.
‘Joker’
Joaquin Phoenix stars in Joker, one of the darkest comic book-inspired pics we’ve seen to date. This origin story shows a poor, mentally ill clown who snaps and turns into a vengeful killer. It’s worth the watch — but put the kids to bed for this one.
‘Just Mercy’
Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx, and Brie Larson star in this legal drama following Bryan Stevenson, a lawyer trying to overturn wrongful convictions and battling the racism and politics of the legal system.
‘Hustlers’
Jennifer Lopez has never been better than Hustlers, based on the true story of a group of strippers who teamed together to scam their clients out of more cash. And yes, J.Lo does all her own pole-dancing.
