It seems that every movie is getting the sequel treatment these days, which means plenty of popcorn movies headed your way. Click through to read about what sequels are coming to theaters between now and 2018.
‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’
Who is Bridget’s baby daddy? That’s the plot of the upcoming third film in the Bridget Jones franchise, scheduled for release Sept. 16, 2016. With her choices being between Colin Firth and Patrick Dempsey, she can’t go too wrong.
‘Super Troopers 2’
Release date: spring 2016. After contributing more than $4.5 million on Indiegogo to support a sequel, fans have proven their love for this group of quirky state troopers.
‘Guardians 2’
Release date: May 5, 2017. With the same director (James Gunn) already on board and hopefully the same cast — and hopefully the same soundtrack — this one will definitely be a huge summer hit.
‘Avatar 2’
Release date: Dec. 25, 2017. James Cameron has signed up to direct round two and will be pushing the limits by filming some scenes 7 miles underwater in the deepest part of the Marianas Trench!
‘The LEGO Movie Sequel’
Release date: May 18, 2018. Although three years seems like a pretty long time, it had to be pushed back from its original release date in 2017 so as not to compete with Despicable Me 3 and Toy Story 4.
‘Maleficent 2’
According to USA Today, Angelina Jolie will return for Maleficent 2, though the exact premise of the film and its potential release date are not yet known.
‘Top Gun 2’
Release date: unknown. Looks like Tom Cruise will be heading back to the danger zone, as the studio, producer, director and screenwriter are all on board to take off.
‘We’re the Millers 2’
Release date: unknown. This sequel was announced on IMDb and already has Rawson Marshall Thurber returning to direct.
‘Zombieland 2’
Release date: unknown. At the end of 2014, Time announced that Zombieland is set to return with the same director and writers.
‘Pacific Rim: Maelstrom’
Release date: February 2018. This is the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 monster movie. John Boyega has reportedly been cast, and producers are also looking at Scott Eastwood to join ranks.
‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5’
Released date: May 2017. This could be the last voyage for Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. It will be subtitled Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Skins star Kaya Scodelario will join the cast as astronomer Carina Smyth.
‘Despicable Me 3’
Release date: June 30, 2017. Gru and the game will return to silly villainy in this threequel.
‘Thor: Ragnarok’
Release date: Nov. 3, 2017. In this sequel, Natalie Portman will not reprise her role as scientist Jane Foster, and Creed star Tessa Thompson will step into a new role in the franchise.
‘Fifty Shades Darker’
Release date: Feb. 10, 2017. The sequel to the sexy romance will hit theaters just before Valentine’s Day. The third film in the trilogy, Fifty Shades Freed, will be out on Feb. 9, 2018.
‘Pitch Perfect 3’
Release date: July 21, 2017. The third movie in the musical franchise will once again star Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson.
‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’
Release date: Dec. 16, 2017. While Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a movie about the Rebel forces who stole plans for the Death Star, will be out in December, we’ll have to wait a bit longer for a sequel to 2015’s The Force Awakens. The continuation of Rey’s journey will hit theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.
‘Amityville: The Awakening’
Release date: Jan. 6, 2017. Bella Thorne stars in the latest addition to the Amityville Horror franchise, about a teenager who suffers horrifying nightmares after moving into the famous haunted house.
‘Trainspotting 2’
Release date: Feb. 10, 2017. According to reports, the sequel to the 1996 Danny Boyle-directed film will be based on Irvine Welsh’s 2002 novel Porno, the follow-up to his 1993 story of Edinburgh heroin addicts that became Trainspotting.
‘Insidious: Chapter 4’
Release date: Oct. 20, 2017. Yet another sequel in the super-creepy paranormal franchise will hit theaters just in time for Halloween.
‘Resident Evil 6’
Release date: Jan. 27, 2017. Reportedly the final chapter in the Resident Evil franchise, the video game-based series will bow out when the movie heads to theaters early 2017.
‘Alien: Covenant’
Release date: Oct. 6, 2017. Technically this film was supposed to be Prometheus 2, a sequel to the Alien prequel, but 20th Century Fox and director Ridley Scott decided to go with this title instead. The new movie will connect the prequel to the 1979 Alien.
