There is nothing quite like a good love song. They make us feel all the things. Especially if you’re in love. These past three years, whenever I’d hear a John Legend song, especially “The Beginning”, I’d be taken back to when my then-boyfriend and I first started dating. I’d think about us starting a life together, and feel all warm and fuzzy. Or when “You & I” would come on Spotify, ahh, I’d sing along thinking that, of course, my boyfriend felt this way about me. But now, newly single, if I even hear 10 seconds of “All of Me”, I have to shut it off. Although I know that soon enough, I’ll be belting “Wild” with a big smile from ear-to-ear, right? Right.
Legend has a way of telling such beautiful love stories through his music. No wonder some of his hits have been among the most popular at weddings. And because he’s telling so much of a story through his lyrics, it only makes sense that the love of his life would be his muse. Enter, Chrissy Teigen.
Legend met Teigen in 2007 on the set for his music video “Stereo” where there was instant chemistry. “We did the music video, we were together for like 12 hours,” she told Wendy Williams in 2014. “We spent the entire day together, me in my underwear and him in a full suit, and I went to go say goodbye to him, to his hotel and we didn’t ever say goodbye that night.” Cut to Sep. 14, 2020, celebrating their seventh wedding anniversary, happily married with two kids and one on the way!
A lot has happened over the last 14 years and through some of Legend’s songs, inspired by his own personal love story, we can see how their relationship has evolved.
“The Beginning”
“Last night was the last night/ You’ll ever spend alone
Couldn’t wait/ Did it in the living room/ Soon as I saw you, baby/ I had plans/ Plans to do it ’til we have a baby,” Legend sang about his first time seeing Teigen.Legend’s hit “The Beginning” was released in 2013 just before he and Chrissy Tied the knot.
“Good Morning”
During a Reddit AMA in 2015, Legend said “Good Morning” was the first song he ever wrote about Chrissy. “morning sex inspired it,” Legend revealed. “My songs are always about love and devotion. ‘Good Morning’ is about sex more explicitly than I’ve written about before.
“All of Me”
There aren’t many other songs as romantic as “All of Me” which was released in 2013. “The first line of it is ‘What would I do without your smart mouth,’ so if that’s not about me I don’t know what is,” Legend said of Teigen.
“Love your curves and all your edges/ All your perfect imperfections,” Legend sings of Teigen who reportedly cried when she first heard the song. Well, yeah.
And with lyrics like, “You’re my end and my beginning/ Even when I lose I’m winning,” you can’t help but melt.
“Love Me Now”
Legend opened up during a Facebook Live performance about the meaning behind the track sharing, “‘Love Me Now’ is all about living and loving to the fullest, no matter what tomorrow may bring.”
‘Wild’
Legend’s newest hit “Wild” is the latest of Legend-Teigen music videos directed by Nabil Elderkin, the same filmmaker who introduced the couple 14 years ago on the set of “Stereo” in 2006.
“I wanna drive you/ Wild, wild, wild/ I wanna love you/ For miles and miles/ We can go slow/ We don’t need to rush/ I’ll take the wheel, make you feel every touch/ I wanna drive you/ Wild, wild, wild,” Legend sings in the single.
It was at the end of this video Legend was seen cradling Teigen’s belly letting the world know they were expecting their third child.
