Matt Lauer is trying to unload a major piece of real estate (again). What’s up for grabs? The disgraced Today anchor’s palatial Hamptons compound known as Strongheart Manor — better known to most as the property he retreated to after being fired from NBC in November 2017. Lauer tried to sell the property last year amid his divorce from wife Annette Roque to no avail. Now, it’s back on the market for $43.99 million.
Lauer, who lost his job after being accused of inappropriate sexual behavior by several co-workers, bought the property from Richard Gere for $36.5 million in 2016. While he and Roque shared several vacation homes, Lauer reportedly favored Strongheart Manor. “He has the privacy he needs and is at peace there,” an insider told Entertainment Tonight last year. “He’s taking care of himself, he’s playing a lot of golf and going to the gym. He has found support from old friends who have reached out.”
The property does seem as though it would be conducive to an active outdoor lifestyle. Situated on 6.3 acres, the estate boasts 300 feet of frontage on the Peconic Bay and a 240-foot-long deep-water dock. There is also a sandy beach with its own waterfront pond (with a bridge, to boot!). Other outdoor amenities include a 60-foot heated waterfront pool and a basketball court.
Scroll through our gallery for a look inside — and out — the Hamptons hideaway, which is listed by Corcoran’s Susan Breitenbach.
From Above
The gated compound offers complete privacy — ideal for hunkering down during a pandemic or, you know, a highly contentious divorce and fall from grace.
Lined in Lavender
The 12-bedroom, 12-bathroom property dates back to 1902 but has been restored in “eco-chic” fashion.
Deep Water Dock
The 240-foot-long private deep water dock is ideal for drowning your sorrows in Peconic Bay sunsets like this one.
An Impressive Entry
Although Strongheart Manor clearly features beautiful historic craftsmanship, the 1902 home has been modernized to the highest standards, too.
Gallery Wall in the Hall
A gallery wall that appears to consist of artful family photos decorates the hallway and highlights the home’s wainscotting.
Detailed Dining Room
The dining room (check out that ceiling!) is one of numerous entertaining areas throughout the estate.
Earthy Living Room
A large stone hearth and warm neutral tones give the living area a cozy, lived-in vibe.
Light & Bright Chef’s Kitchen
The massive, beachy-white kitchen features a center island, top-of-the-line appliances, a unique shiplap ceiling and tons of natural light.
Beachy Bedroom
In keeping with the estate’s proximity to Sag Harbor, the bedrooms are decorated in a distinctive Hamptons beach-house style.
Marble Master Bath
Marble countertops? Check. Giant soaking tub? Double check. Strongheart Manor’s master bathroom is basically exactly what you’d expect.
Dreamy Dining Nook
The dining nook shows off the estate’s stunning views of the Peconic Bay and Mashomack Preserve.
Sweat Equity
Lauer reportedly whiled away many hours of isolation in this spacious home gym.
A Charming (& Lengthy) Walkway
A beautiful walkway exemplifies the charm and character of the estate (which is energy-efficient and geothermal, just FYI).
Outdoor Fireplace
Who wouldn’t want to quarantine in front of an outdoor fireplace like this?
A Pool with a View
Strongheart Manor’s 60-foot heated pool looks out over the ocean for nearly year-round enjoyment and views.
