As our favorite musicians’ love lives have waxed and waned over the years, their Grammy Awards red carpet partners have shifted too. After all, this is no Friday date night — this is the big leagues. And when you know those photos will live on forever, you want to make sure you’re really sure before you face the flashing cameras as a couple. As a result, we’ve seen many of the most iconic celebrity relationships memorialized on the Grammys red carpet over the years, both those that have lasted — like Chrissy Teigen and John Legend, or Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban — and those that haven’t — like Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert or Katy Perry and Russell Brand. Looking back on celebrity couples at the Grammys over the years, we can’t help but remember how much our favorite artists’ lives have changed, even if their partner has stayed the same.
Between the photos of couples in the ’90s and the 2020 show, it’s crazy how much has changed. It’s not just the fashion, the hairstyles, and the music that have evolved over the years but the celebrities themselves who are constantly growing into older and wiser versions of themselves while we watch them with pride. Yes, some of these photos might break your heart, like Kim Kardashian and Kanye West all over each other in 2015, but others will warm it, like Faith Hill and Tim McGraw’s red carpet evolution over the years.
Read on to see celebrity couples who took the Grammys by storm from 1999 to 2020: the exes, the forever loves, and everyone in between.
A version of this was originally published in 2021.
Faith Hill & Tim McGraw, 1999
This photo of country music sweethearts Faith Hill and Tim McGraw was taken three years after they got married. In 1996 and 1997, the couple was nominated for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals at the Grammys for their duets “It’s Your Love” and “Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me.”
Jennifer Lopez & Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, 2000
Talk about a power couple. Both J.Lo and Puff Daddy were nominated in 2000: the former for “Waiting For Tonight” as best dance recording, and the latter for “Satisfy You” for best rap performance by a duo or group (unfortunately, it featured R. Kelly).
Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale, 2005
Remember when? In 2005, Gwen Stefani was nominated for her pop vocal performance of “What You Waiting For,” and husband of three years Gavin Rossdale was there for moral support.
Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale, 2006
In 2006, Gwen Stefani more or less owned the Grammys. She was nominated five times over (let that sink in), with record of the year and best female pop vocal performance for “Hollaback Girl” and album of the year and best pop vocal album for Love. Angel. Music. Baby. Oh, and she was pregnant with her and Rossdale’s first son Kingston.
Black Shelton & Miranda Lambert, 2008
Before there was Gwen, there was Miranda Lambert. She and Blake Shelton met in 2005 and came to the Grammys together three years later for Lambert’s “Famous in a Small Town” nomination for best female country vocal performance.
Katy Perry & Russell Brand, 2010
Katy Perry and Russell Brand were married for 14 months, during which time they attended the Grammys together twice. In 2010, Perry’s pop vocal performance of “Hot n Cold” was nominated for an award.
Heidi Klum & Seal, 2010
Neither Seal nor wife Heidi Klum were nominated for a Grammy in 2010, but they came to see and be seen, and we appreciate it.
Keith Urban & Nicole Kidman, 2010
Be still, our hearts. These two met in 2006 and married that same year, looking just as in love here four years later, when Urban showed up and won a Grammy for best male country vocal performance with hit song “Sweet Thing.”
Fergie & Josh Duhamel, 2010
These two are the definition of arm candy making a splash at the 2010 Grammys. Fergie was between nominations and had been engaged to Duhamel for three years, though she wouldn’t marry him until 2011 (and they wouldn’t separate until 2019).
Pink & Carey Hart, 2010
Pink was double-nominated in 2010 for pop vocal performance of “Sober” and pop vocal album Funhouse. She and Hart had married four years earlier in 2006.
Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony, 2011
Never forget. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony got married in 2004 and broke things off in 2011 — months after this photo was taken.
Katy Perry & Russell Brand, 2011
In 2011, Perry had twice-nominated album Teenage Dream, plus noms for singles “Teenage Dream” and “California Gurls.” Her time with Brand, though, was coming to an end. Brand broke things off in December of that year.
Heidi Klum & Seal, 2011
This couple is all smiles at the Grammys, where Seal was nominated for “Imagine.” Sadly, their marriage would end the following year.
Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith, 2011
We love seeing a throwback photo of one of our favorite couples! Will and Jada are looking impeccable on this red carpet, already married for 14 years and looking like they know they have 15 more.
Miranda Lambert & Blake Shelton, 2012
Shelton’s solo performance of “Honey Bee” was nominated in 2012, along with country album Red River Blue. The couple had tied the knot just one year prior in this pic.
Chrissy Teigen & John Legend, 2013
Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are nine months away from getting married here, and they’re certainly looking wedding ready!
Tim McGraw & Faith Hill, 2013
Checking back in on our faves 14 years later and gasping at this style transformation. McGraw’s signature hat is there to stay, but Hill’s sleek dark lines couldn’t be more different from her ’90s look.
Blake Shelton & Miranda Lambert, 2014
Shelton was again nominated twice in 2014, for album Based on a True Story and country performance “Mine Would Be You.” Lambert was also nominated for her solo performance of “Mama’s Broken Heart.”
Robin Thicke & Paula Patton, 2014
Robin Thicke and Paula Patton’s 21-year marriage ended months after this year’s Grammy Awards, where Thicke was nominated three times over for best pop vocal album and best record with Blurred Lines and pop duo/group performance for single “Blurred Lines.”
Pink & Carey Hart, 2014
Pink is shining in red and nominated twice over at the 2014 Grammys, for pop duo/group performance and best song with “Just Give Me A Reason.”
Kim Kardashian & Kanye West, 2015
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West married in May 2014 in Italy, and eight months later at the Grammys they couldn’t keep their hands off each other on the red carpet.
Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban, 2015
We love how happy Keith Urban always looks just to be standing next to Nicole Kidman! He’s nominated twice this year: country solo performance for “Cop Car” and country duo/group performance for “Raise ‘Em Up.”
Blake Shelton & Miranda Lambert, 2015
Lambert was nomianted three times in 2015, for “Somethin’ Bad” once and “Automatic” twice. Sadly, she and Shelton split later this year, and Shelton started dating Gwen Stefani before the year had ended.
Chrissy Teigen & John Legend, 2016
Chrissy’s pregnant with their first child, her daughter Luna, here, and Legend is about to win a Grammy for “Glory,” best song written for visual media.
Tim McGraw & Faith Hill, 2017
You’ll pry that hat away from his cold, dead hands. Meanwhile, Hill’s back to her colorful roots in this super sexy red gown. 21 years of marriage never looked so good!
Kelly Clarkson & Brandon Blackstock, 2018
No one would have guessed that Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock would divorce two years after posing on the Grammys red carpet together, where Clarkson was nominated for her pop solo performance of “Love So Soft.” She and Blackstock married in 2013, and Clarkson filed for divorce in 2020.
Chrissy Teigen & John Legend, 2018
Baby’s on board once again with Chrissy Teigen and John Legend in 2018: they’re expecting their second child, Miles, who’s born later that year.
Kacey Musgraves & Ruston Kelly, 2019
In 2019, Kacey Musgraves was a four-time Grammy winner: Best country album and best album? Golden Hour. Best country song? “Space Cowboy.” Best country vocal performance? “Butterflies.” Two years earlier, she and husband Ruston Kelly had tied the knot — but come summer 2020, they announced their separation.
Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton, 2020
Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton took the Grammys by storm in 2020 just after announcing their engagement after five years of dating. Shelton was nominated for country solo performance of “God’s Country,” and he and Stefani performed their duet “Nobody But You.”
John Legend & Chrissy Teigen, 2020
One of the last few big nights before COVID-19 hit in 2020 saw Teigen and husband of seven years Legend out at the Grammys, where Legend won a best rap/sung performance Grammy for “Higher.”
Priyanka Chopra & Nick Jonas, 2020
Nick Jonas had his eye on Priyanka Chopra since 2016 but it took them some time to first meet, making their red carpet debut at the 2017 Met Gala and embarking on a whirlwind romance that saw them married by the end of 2018.
