These Photos of Prince Philip & His Family Are a Testament to His Long Royal Service

On April 9, 2021, the British royal family confirmed the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. In a statement shared by Buckingham Palace, the royal family shared that Queen Elizabeth II’s husband Philip had died at age 99 at his home in Windsor Castle just a few weeks after returning home from a hospital stay for heart surgery. The Duke lived a long and exceptional life of royal service, devoted to his wife the Queen until the very end and a longtime fixture in state affairs. He’s met with the Pope, the Beatles, and nine U.S. presidents — and even more impressive is his beautiful family.

“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the royal family’s statement read. “His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”

Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II shared four children: Prince Charles, their eldest, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward. His eight grandchildren form the generation of the royal family best known today, though Edward’s kids Lady Louise and James, Viscount Severn stay more out of the spotlight: Prince William and Prince Harry, of course, but also Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, Andrew’s daughters, and Peter Philipps and Zara Tindall, Harry’s close cousin who just welcomed a royal baby.

As we mourn the passing of Prince Philip on what would’ve been his 102nd birthday, we can take heart in knowing that the royals are sure to keep his legacy alive and well. Read on for our favorite photos of the Duke from his long and fascinating life.
