It’s been a long year without red carpets — and then suddenly, they are all the rage. Celebrities have been reunited with their glam squads and stylists, and reminding us what it is like to get dressed up for a night on the town. From the Met Gala to the Emmys, and now the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Opening Gala, we finally get to see some serious fashion.
The new rules for the red carpet are “anything goes.” Nobody has to follow strict protocols and feel like they won’t fit in if they don’t wear the right thing. The Academy Gala proves that a sleek pair of pants accented with the right top (yes, Tiffany Haddish) works just as well as a stunning couture gown (high five to Kaia Gerber). And it’s also nice to see some of our red carpet favorites whom we always know will deliver the drama and stunning looks — we see you, Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry and Lady Gaga.
Now every look may not work for you, but that’s the beauty of making a fashion statement after a pandemic — there’s no judgment, only the enjoyment of seeing people looking and feeling their best for a night out on the town. We think Gabrielle Union’s look hit all of the right notes, but you might have someone else in mind — and don’t miss the rare photo of Meg Ryan who hasn’t been on a red carpet in ages.
Lady Gaga
The baby blue billowing sleeves are what makes this Schiaparelli gown on Lady Gaga.
Katy Perry & Orlando Bloom
Mom and dad (aka Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom) had a night on the town and kept it simple in black, with Katy Perry donning Louis Vuitton.
Kate Hudson
Newly engaged Kate Hudon showed off her gorgeous legs in Louis Vuitton.
Mj Rodriguez
Mj Rodriguez strikes a glittery pose in this Brandon Maxwell dress.
Natasha Lyonne
The contrast of Natasha Lyonne’s striking red hair and the rocker feel of this Sebastian Gunawan dress hits all of the right notes.
Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman is a breath of fresh air with her loose curly locks and the floral Rodarte dress.
Laverne Cox
Laverne Cox looks regal in this silvery white Johanna Johnson gown that was custom-made for her.
Van Hunt & Halle Berry
We adore these lovebirds and Halle Berry looks amazing in her short Etro dress.
Tiffany Haddish
We love that Tiffany Haddish kept it comfortable with the asymmetrical top adding a bit of glam with the big bow.
Kaia Gerber & Jacob Elordi
Kaia Gerber and boyfriend Jacob Elordi made their red carpet debut in Celine.
Meg Ryan
A rare night out for Meg Ryan — don’t be a stranger, we miss you. She looks lovely in this Ulyana Sergeenko gown.
Gabrielle Union
Gabrielle Union wins the night in this floaty Alexandre Vauthier Couture gown that shows off her fit figure.
Adriana Lima
Every red carpet needs some supermodel presence — Adriana Lima glammed it up in Nicolas Jebran.
Angela Bassett
Angela Bassett is absolutely gorgeous (and ageless) in this Elie Saab Couture design.
Riley Keough
We love that Riley Keough went with a bold color in this Schiaparelli design.
