Throughout the decades, it seems like there has been one enduring holiday tradition. No, we’re not talking about that specific recipe you whip out every year that’s been passed down from your great-great-grandmother. (Although, let’s be honest, that’s just as cool and likely just as important as the specific tradition we’re referring to.) We’re talking about holiday and Christmas cards. From funny, quirky photos that summarize the year we’ve had — and we’ve had a year — to sweet and sentimental ones that announce a new arrival or commemorate a major life milestone.
Holiday and Christmas cards have been a beloved note to get in the mail for years, and so many people around the world send them, including the British royal family. Yes, for decades the House of Windsor have donned their smiles and their best ‘fits for the perfect photo to send all those on their mailing list. Though why we’ve never been included is beyond us.
But every year, whether we find the holiday card in our mail slot or not, the royal family often shares their latest photos on social media, and we get to see just how much they youngest members of the royal family have grown! Take the ‘80s as a prime example. Throughout the decade, Prince Charles and Princess Diana posed with sons Prince William and Prince Harry. The images ranged from candid to posed, but there was so much cuteness everywhere in between. Don’t believe us? Check out the collection of royal family Christmas cards we’ve put together!

Here we have a more formal look at the House of Windsor. This 1979 Christmas photo features Prince Edward, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II, and Prince Andrew in the garden with their dogs. Note one pooches backside in the bottom right corner made the final cut.

A family of four! Here is Prince Charles, Princess Diana, Prince William, and an infant Prince Harry posing for the camera for their 1984 Christmas card.
1985
The 1985 Christmas card from the Prince and Princess of Wales was a bit more candid, and featured Princes William and Harry on the back of a miniature horse (though how Harry was able to balance so well at such a young age is anyone’s guess!).
1986
The 1986 Christmas card from the Princess and Prince of Wales featured a little four-legged family member. But as always, Princes William and Harry stole the show with their adorable grins.
1987
We have to admit, this one is among our favorites. The Prince and Princess of Wales posed with their boys for this charming 1987 Christmas card. William was really cheesin’ up a storm!
1989
When it comes to tradition, though, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s 1989 Christmas card definitely fits the mold. Black and white? Check. In a carriage? Check. Appearing regal and commanding? Absolutely a check there.
1989
That same year, Princess Diana and Prince Charles had a more formal photo taken with their two boys — both in little suits for this one, as you can see.
1993
With the Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage nearing an end, the two made the decision to do separate Christmas cards with their boys. This was Prince Charles and his sons in 1993.
