There’s nothing quite as magical and heartwarming as a strong mother-daughter relationship. We’ve seen them in real life, in movies, and on red carpets alike, fawning over every duo we see. But throughout the decades, we’ve truly fallen in love with Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn’s strong and honest bond with one another.
Hawn has two children with ex-husband Bill Hudson named Oliver, 45, and Kate, 43 (along with a son with boyfriend Kurt Russell named Wyatt Russell, 35!) While she is close to all of her children, there’s something extra special about her relationship with Kate.
From touching Instagram tribute posts to dual interviews where they laugh for minutes on end, it’s nearly impossible to not love the two. Ever since Kate’s career skyrocketed in the early 2000s, it’s rare to not see the two laughing and acting silly together. Throughout the years, they’ve credited each other as their cheerleaders, confidantes, and even best friends (Yes, our hearts are melting too!).
Here’s the kicker: it’s almost always been that way. Since Kate was a teenager, they quickly realized the strong bond they had with one another. From honest advice to frank sex talks, their relationship is one of the most touching we’ve seen in Hollywood.
Check out their sweet mother-daughter bond through the years in the photos below!
Goldie Used to Embarrass Kate As a Kid
On Good Morning America, Kate revealed that her mom Goldie has always been a bubbly, happy parent. She recalled her childhood fondly, saying, “I remember when my mom would do hot lunch at school, with the pizza and the singing. You know, she pirouettes everywhere. It’s the best — she’s still pirouetting everywhere. But when you’re a kid and your parents are wild like that, you [cringe].”
Goldie Wanted Kate To Rely On Herself With Her Career
When Kate Hudson decided she was going into acting, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell made it clear that she couldn’t rely on them. While they were incredibly supportive, they wanted her to earn her way honestly. She previously told The Edit in a now-deleted interview per Independent, “[My parents] said, OK, but we’re not going to [financially] support you. They made it clear that we grew up privileged, and that it was theirs, not ours.”
But Goldie Helped Kate Make Acting Decisions Early On
But being self-reliant didn’t stop Goldie Hawn from helping out her daughter picking out acting roles every now and then. Marcia Ross was the casting director for the cult-classic 10 Things I Hate About You, and she told the NYTimes that they actually wanted Kate Hudson for a role. “The other person I loved was Kate Hudson. But her mom [Goldie Hawn] didn’t like the script for her, so she passed.”
Goldie Wanted Kate To Form Her Own Identity
Goldie Hawn once said to Oprah Winfrey in her archived master class, per HuffPost, that as a parent, she wanted her children to gain their own identities. “We as mothers have to be able to not just pass the baton but to be able to give free reign for your daughter to grow, to make mistakes. Doesn’t mean they’re not watched. But it means that they’re honored. Just be there. You don’t always have to power over. I believe that this is one of the most important things as a parent you can do … to let go, in times, so these children can formulate their own identity.”
Kate Loves That She Looks Like Her Mom
Unlike some mother-daughter duos, Kate Hudson loves it when people say she looks like Goldie Hawn. According to an archived BlogHer interview per People, Hudson was once noted to have said “I have zero problems when people say, ‘God, you look like your mother.’ I go, ‘Well, great! Thanks!’”
They’ve Always Been Open About Sex
Back in April of 2020 when the two were the cover stars of People Magazine, Kate and Goldie revealed that they talk about sex a lot. Kate said, “What did you teach me about sex? There are so many things. We talk a lot about sex. Surprisingly.” Goldie added that she wanted Kate to know when she was younger that she wasn’t a “prude.” She said, “I said, ‘I want you to understand something about Mommy. I’m not a prude. I love sex.'”
Kate Calls Goldie Her ‘Confidante’
Kate Hudson once told E! Online that her mama is her confidante, saying, “I can’t keep things in, really. For as long as she can remember, I’ve never felt like I’ve had to hide anything from mom. If anything, she’s always been my confidante.” In another interview in 2016 with Popsugar, Hudson also said, “I pretty much talk to her every day. I can’t really go a week. I’ve gone a week, but it’s super rare.”
They Tell Each Other Everything
Goldie Hawn once told Closer Weekly that they share everything with one another. “As we grow older together, I can’t express the amount of love, joy, laughter, and sadness we share. She understands me, I understand her. We’re girls. We share everything.”
They Help Each Other Through Rough Times
While on the Rachel Ray Show in 2016, Kate said that along with being her confidante, Goldie is her rock. During a rough time, she recalled how her mother calmed her down, saying, “My mom took me through this visual experience where she asked me to squint my eyes very small and try to look at everything as if I’m looking at it for the first time.”
She added, “What happened was I realized it kind of calmed my system down and it made me less reactive, less emotional, and it make me kind of enjoy the experience of where I was at that moment. To have a mom like that to be able to give you those tools is a really special thing and I think there’s a lot of people who would like to have those tools in their life.”
Goldie Inspires Kate Daily
Back in 2014, Kate Hudson revealed to SELF the best, most inspiring advice Goldie Hawn ever gave her. “My mom once said something so poignant to me: ‘Honor your female friendships, because men can come and go, but when we nurture our relationships with women, they can be forever.’ I really believe that. My girlfriends are so important to me. They’ve been my rock-solid foundation.” She added, “You have a choice: Support the woman standing next to you or compete with her. But if you compete, you’re going to be miserable. Stick with what motivates you and makes you happy.”
Kate Inspires Goldie Too
In a 2018 interview with People, Goldie Hawn also said she is both inspired by and proud of her superstar daughter. She said, “We hope our children will amplify the best part of us. I’m proud of my daughter. She has become a spokesperson herself for children’s wellness, for happiness, all the things that she grew up with.”
Goldie Taught Kate How To Amicably Co-Parent
Like her mother Goldie, Kate has had a few husbands with whom she has children. During a podcast episode of Divorce Sucks! With Laura Wasser, she revealed that her mother taught her how to amicably co-parent. “The one thing that I learned from my mom is that no matter what you’re feeling and no matter what — when I see my friends talking s**t about their ex-spouses in front of their kids, I get so upset because they don’t recognize how much that affects their child and how resentful their child will become of them,” she explained. “No matter what, I never heard a bad word about my father.”
Goldie Is Kate’s Role Model
Per People, Kate Hudson said her mama is her inspiration. “As much as she means to other people for other reasons, she is literally the life force for me and my family.” She continued in another interview with People, saying, “My mom gave me the floor to be able to feel confident enough to go out and feel like my life could be my own. Mom was my greatest cheerleader. And it just made me think about Rani…going, ‘I hope I give her that kind of confidence,’ you know?”
Kate Says She ‘Inherited’ Her Love For Life From Goldie
When the pair were set to model for Stuart Weitzman, Kate released a press release statement about her mom and the project, saying, “My mom has always been an inspiration to me and, in so many ways, the foundation for my values. There’s no doubt that I inherited her love for life and all of its experiences, big and small.”
Goldie Is Insanely Proud of Her Family
In a previous interview with Australian Women’s Weekly, Goldie said that the key to happiness is her family. “A good family is the answer to happiness. I look at our kids and grandchildren and there’s nothing in the world that could make me as proud as I am of all of them.”
