If it feels like you’re having a bit of fashion-induced whiplash, you’d be right. Less than a year after the 2021 Met Gala, we returned for another night of glitz, glamour, and major sartorial statements. The 2022 Met Gala happened last night, and the stars aligned in New York City for what is arguably one of the fashion world’s biggest nights. Even though several of our favorite celebs showed off their fierce frocks and dapper duds, not every star in the Hollywood firmament was in attendance. Yes, we hate to break it to you, but not everyone made it to the 2022 Met Gala red carpet.
We’ve been disappointed in the past, but some of these misses really left our fashion-loving hearts aching. Take for instance: Zendaya. The Emmy winner is a beloved Met Gala attendee who always turns out some of the best looks the red carpet has seen the past few years. But much like the 2021 Met Gala, Zendaya did not attend the 2022 festivities. “But why?!” we hear you screaming into the void. Don’t worry, the actress offered a reason for her absence.
“I don’t want to disappoint my fans here, but I will be working,” the star told Extra in a recent interview. “Your girl’s gotta work and make some movies; so I wish everyone the best.” Ok, well, work seems like a fair reason to miss out on the Met Gala. While Zendaya is working on her next film, we really missed out on seeing the young star work her latest Met Gala look. Curious to see who else skipped the 2022 Met Gala? Take a look at our slideshow!
Zendaya
Any time Zendaya has hit the Met Gala red carpet, she’s absolutely slayed. Her looks have gone unmatched, but sadly we won’t see this fashion icon return to the Met Gala just yet. After missing the 2021 red carpet, Zendaya revealed she’d be missing the 2022 Met Gala, as well. “I don’t want to disappoint my fans here, but I will be working,” Zendaya told Extra. “Your girl’s gotta work and make some movies; so I wish everyone the best.” The actress is currently filming Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers.
Rihanna & A$AP Rocky
While Rihanna’s absence was deeply felt at this year’s Met Gala, there’s a very good reason the singer and fashion mogul skipped the event. Rihanna is in her third trimester of pregnancy, and likely taking the time she needs to prepare for the next chapter in her life. Her partner, A$AP Rocky, also skipped this year’s Met Gala — likely to be with Rihanna.
Harry Styles
Harry Styles also opted out of this year’s Met Gala, likely due to the number of projects he’s already working on. The trailer for his upcoming film Don’t Worry Darling (directed by partner Olivia Wilde and co-starring Oscar nominee Florence Pugh) just debuted. Plus, the singer and actor recently completed filming on My Policeman. It’s no surprise he probably wanted to take a break amid such a busy schedule.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga turned heads when she last attended the Met Gala in 2019. That year, the theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion and Gaga was one of the co-chairs. This year, however, the singer missed out on the evening’s festivities as she’s been in Las Vegas performing in her residency.
Serena Williams
Serena Williams looked so regal at the 2021 Met Gala, but didn’t attend the 2022 festivities. We’re not sure why the 23-time Grand Slam champion missed out (though we’d like to think she was preparing for her rumored Wimbledon return). Her sister, Venus Williams, was in attendance and noted her sister’s absence.
Megan Fox
Megan Fox’s 2021 Met Gala look was a total stunner. But this year, the actress did not attend. We’re not sure why Fox wasn’t on the red carpet — perhaps it was a scheduling conflict — but we definitely missed out on her Met Gala debut with fiancé Machine Gun Kelly.
Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus has been on tour for quite some time. So it’s more than understandble why the singer chose not to attend this year’s Met Gala. She recently completed her South American Attention tour, posting a heartfelt message to Twitter about what the series of shows meant to her.
Beyoncé
Beyoncé’s presence was also missed at this year’s Met Gala. It’s the second year in a row Queen Bey did not attend the event, but it seems like her reason was pretty understandable. According to the Daily Mail, Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z recently arrived in Miami just a day out from the Met Gala.
Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande hasn’t attended the Met Gala since 2018, but her absence was nevertheless surprising. The singer, however, has quite the busy work schedule ahead. She was recently cast as Glinda in the upcoming film adaptation of Wicked, and filming starts fairly soon.
Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift hasn’t attended the Met Gala since 2016. Thought it was still odd not to see such a high-profile star on the red carpet, it’s not all that surprising. Swift has been keeping a low profile as of late as she re-records her music. Plus, she and partner Joe Alwyn are rarely spotted out together.
Ben Affleck & Jennifer Lopez
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez were just one of the many celeb couples we were hoping to see at last night’s Met Gala. While the two had a swoon-worthy moment at the 2021 after-party, they opted to forgo the 2022 festivities all together. The newly-engaged couple has been house-hunting for a while, and is likely spending time with their family and enjoying the bliss of their engagement.
Wiz Khalifa
Wiz Khalifa announced he wasn’t heading to the 2022 Met Gala with this tweet: “They were scared of me smoking on the red carpet or at the event so no met gala. I don’t blame em but weed is legal dude, sheesh.”
