Prince Harry and Meghan Markle headed back to New York City for a special speaking engagement at the United Nations in honor of the Nelson Mandela International Day ceremony on July 18. It was a huge honor for the Sussexes to be able to attend since Mandela’s family and the continent of Africa have played an integral part in their relationship and their activism.
The Duke of Sussex noted this connection in his address how much he loved Africa and why it remains so close to his heart. “For most of my life, it has been my lifeline, a place where I found peace and healing time and time again,” he said. “It’s where I felt closest to my mother and sought solace after she died, and where I knew I had found a soulmate in my wife.” The couple went camping in Botswana after just two dates in London, but that time was magical for them because they knew how deep their love for each other was.
He also made sure to honor his mother Princess Diana and Mandela by mentioning that he keeps a 1997 snapshot (given to him by Archbishop Desmond Tutu) of the two of them in his home. “When I first looked at the photo, straight away what jumped out is the joy on my mother’s face. The playfulness — cheekiness, even,” he shared. “The pure delight to be in communion with another soul so committed to serving humanity.” That legacy continues on with Harry and Meghan, and you can see from the photos how important the appearance was to them — and how connected they are as husband and wife.
