If you’ve ever wanted to be royal family adjacent, now is the time to do it as a property owned by Queen Elizabeth II’s first cousin, Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, is up for sale. He’s listed his childhood home, Barnwell Manor, for $5.28 million — it’s a historic property on 27 acres in Northamptonshire, England.
The main residence has a whopping 30,000 square feet of living space and the new owner will get a bonus castle, the 13th-century Barnwell Castle, in the deal. The primary home was built in 1600 and bought by Prince Richard’s dad, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, in 1938. The property was renovated over the years by architect Sir Albert Edward Richardson, but Prince Richard left his country life to raise his own family at Kensington Palace in London. Since 1995, the estate has been a rental property and could use a bit of TLC once the new owners move in.
There is plenty to work with as the home has good bones with tremendously detailed woodwork, plenty of natural light, and views of the majestic grounds. The residence has multiple apartments and suites that would work well for staff quarters or long-term guests, in addition to the eight bedrooms for the family. It also offers plenty of space for formal occasions, including a dining room and four reception rooms — and don’t miss the unbelievable grounds with a pond, stables for horses, and a kennel for the hunting hounds. As listing agent Crispin Holborow at Savills noted to Dirt, “Barnwell Manor effortlessly brings together stunning architecture and an illustrious history of ownership, which includes some of the most important families in British history, past and present.”
