When it comes to LGBTQ+ sex scenes, exploring actual intimacy on-screen has only recently started to enjoy the same prevalence as hetero couples going at it — and these movies and TV shows prove that Hollywood’s finest are eager to make up for lost time.
Take Michael Grandage’s My Policeman, for example. The movie stars Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, and David Dawson, and is about two closeted gay men in 1950s Brighton. It poised itself as the next chapter in LGBTQ+ sex on-screen, with Styles specifically discussing how he hopes the love scenes can show the “tender” side to gay sex so long left off-screen.
For decades, any suggestion of LGBTQ+ romance on-screen had to restrain itself to implications and suggestions for fear of both legal ramifications and perceived offense. LGBTQ+ sex scenes have faced the same uphill battle in gaining mainstream acceptance, fighting against the backwards idea that they are too lurid or graphic for audiences that might be perfectly comfortable with equally explicit heterosexual sex.
All that being said — sometimes, X-rated is exactly you want, and LGBTQ+ community finally has plenty of representation for both intense, fluid-swapping sex and soft, romantic sex in our movie and TV offerings. We’re rounding up some of the most titillating, seductive, and earth-shaking LGBTQ+ sex scenes of all time in movies and TV shows like Gia, Sense8, The Handmaiden, and, yes, Brokeback Mountain.

My Policeman
Styles and Dawson expertly showcase the complicated nature of gay romance in a time when it was strictly forbidden. Their tender love story features many poignant sex scenes but also pays homage to the many people constrained by the criminalization of LGBTQ romances.
God’s Own Country
Josh O’Connor delivers a stunning performance in this romantic drama which is set in rural north of England. O’Connor plays a sheep farmer who begins a secret and passionate love affair with a migrant worker, played by Alec Secăreanu.
The Feels
During Andi and Lu’s joint-bachelorette party, Lu admits she’s never had an orgasm and Andi takes it upon herself to make sure that changes by the end of the weekend. Not only is this film quite funny, but the love scenes are can’t-miss!
A Fantastic Woman
Trans sex is extremely underrepresented in the media so we love this Oscar-winning film that beautifully displays a transgender Chilean woman embracing her sexuality.
Carol
Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett’s tender New Year’s Eve love scene is one of the most passionate moments in this 2015 drama that celebrates female friendship and women loving women.
Below Her Mouth
So very much of April Mullen’s NC-17 Below Her Mouth is one long lesbian sex scene that it’s hard to pick out just one as its number one steamiest, but that’s not exactly a problem. It’s a classic set-up: innocent, engaged-to-a-man Jasmine (Natalie Krill) meets sexy, emotionally unavailable Dallas (Erika Linder) and sparks fly. She tries to convince herself nothing can happen and that she needs to be faithful to her fiancé, followed by an hour or so of frantic, orgasmic consummation of her sudden and electric crush. Their first full sex scene releases the tension from Jasmine’s attempts to resist Dallas and gives a long, slow look at the start-to-finish of Jasmine giving in to her desire.
Brokeback Mountain
I’m almost sorry to include this one given how little actual sex we see compared to the others on this list, but a classic is a classic for a reason. Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain includes a fleeting moment of consummation between Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal’s characters that starts with the two men getting drunk by the fire, then retreating back to their tent to warm up with the heat of eachother’s bodies. It’s a rare depiction of anal sex for the early 2000s and has since been criticized for not accurately depicting the kind of prep required to engage in it comfortably, but the build-up between these two men and the passion that finally explodes between them has made it a mainstay of LGBT cinema nonetheless.
Black Swan
Darren Aronofsky’s psychological ballet thriller displays an oddly terrifying but steamy scene between Nina (Natalie Portman) and Lily (Mila Kunis), in which Lily eats Nina out but, the next day, swears it never happened.
Bros
2022 movie Bros made history as the first romantic comedy from a major studio about two gay men. In the movie, Billy Eichner plays an emotionally unavailable 40-year-old podcaster and Luke Macfarlane plays an impossibly handsome musclebound “bro” who is just as damaged. Together, they “stumble” into love together, the official synopsis reads.
As for their steamy scenes, the two proved they were down for just about anything, from slap fights to toe sucks. “It’s fun for straight audiences, because they see things that are familiar, like texting with someone you might like and using dating apps, then there are other things that are very new and … dare I say, educational,” Eichner told Australia News.
Gia
One of Angelina Jolie’s most legendary gay sex scenes in Michael Cristofer’s Gia, based on the real life of supermodel Gia Carangi, starts with a moment many describe as just as erotic as the sex itself. On set for a photo shoot, Jolie’s Gia and Elizabeth Mitchell’s Linda stand naked and approach each other from opposite sides of a chain link fence, pressing their bodies against the metal. Moments later, they fall into bed together back at Gia’s home and thoroughly explore each other’s bodies, the camera following their lips and hands.
Weekend
Andrew Haigh’s Weekend tells the story of a weekend between Glen (Chris New) and Russell (Tom Cullen) that starts as a one-night stand and turns into something more as they realize just how strong their connection could be. They’re only living in the same place for that weekend, so their affair is necessarily constrained to those 48 hours, and the movie’s sex scenes are made all the more sexy for knowing that this is all it can ever be. It also helps that Haigh was not afraid to get into the nitty-gritty of what sex between two men entails. The film’s final sex scene is both emotional and seriously hot, and a rare love scene that puts a oral sex front and center.
Orange Is the New Black
Of course, we can’t compile a list of the steamiest LGBTQ sex scenes without mentioning Orange Is the New Black, which gave us seven seasons of hot lesbian action between couples like Alex and Piper, Lorna and Nicky, and Poussey and Soso. Between the inventive, clandestine sex scenes that take place in prison and flashbacks to the inmates’ sexual experiences in earlier life, there’s plenty of material (and plenty of different pairings) to mix and match as you please.
Disobedience
Sebastián Lelio’s Disobedience is a passionate tale of forbidden love between Rachel Weisz’s Ronit and Rachel McAdams’ Esti, childhood friends in North London’s Orthodox Jewish community. Ronit returns to the community after years of estrangement and reconnects with now-married Esti, who soon confesses that she’s unfulfilled by her life choices and still thinks of her adolescent tryst with Ronit. The women begin a passionate affair, culminating in an extended hotel room sex scene that sees both women bringing each other to orgasm.
The Handmaiden
Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden is an erotic period thriller telling the story of an affair between heiress Lady Hideko (Min-Hee Kim) and her maid Sook-Hee (Kim Tae-ri), with three thrilling sex scenes and a lot of sensual, edge-of-your-seat buildup to their eventual lovemaking. Depending on whether you prefer your sex scenes sensual, explicit, or kinky, there’s a little something for everyone in The Handmaiden’s offerings. Their second sex scene — really, a revisiting of of their first — is our most graphic and extended look at all that their sex entails, with long, lingering shots of their writhing, entwined bodies.
Sense8
The Wachowski siblings and J. Michael Straczynski’s Sense8 has no shortage of hot queer sex scenes, but it’s the season 1, episode 6 orgy scene that’s really taken real estate in people’s minds. First, some context: Capheus, Sun, Nomi, Kala, Riley, Wolfgang, Lito, and Will discover that they are “sensates” who can feel each other’s experiences, communicate telepathically, and share their mental and emotional experiences.
This connection takes on a whole new meaning with season 1, episode 6’s orgy scene — the show’s first, but not its last.
Duck Butter
Netflix favorite Duck Butter follows two women named Naima and Kate, who make a pact to spend 24 hours together to see if something blooms. And let’s just say, they spend those 24 hours wisely (and super sexily!)
Concussion
After a concussion, Abby realizes she wants a change in her life. She spends the night with a housewife, which in turn, inspires her to become a secret escort. As you can imagine, there are quite a few steamy love scenes.
