On Dec 8 and Dec 15, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry released the Volume I and Volume II of their Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan. In its six episodes, the two revealed some new details about their lives as royals, their sweet love story, their decision to step down from their roles and their new life as parents of two in California.
Though the two are retelling their past few years together, Harry’s mom Princess Diana comes up often during the show. Whether it’s about her fearlessness in confronting the paparazzi or her decision to speak her truth in the notorious Panorama interview, Diana’s name is brought up a lot in the series – and it’s quite heartwarming to see.

After all, Diana died in 1997 when Harry was only 12 years old and Markle, of course, was nowhere near the picture. But, as the show suggests, Diana still remains very close to them today in spirit, from their activism to the way they protect their two kids.
Below are a few of the moments that the new Netflix hit has mentioned Diana, and the compelling and sometimes heartbreaking details they’ve shared along the way.
Mama Bear Moment
In addition to confessionals and ultra-rare pics of Meghan and Harry, the new docuseries also showed some never-seen-before footage of Diana herself. In one moment, Harry talked about a specific ski trip in which the paparazzi were harassing the family in a whole other level.
Though Harry was understandly “uncomfortable,” he said his mother’s protection was crucial in making him calmer. “My mom did such a good job in trying to protect us,” he said. “She took it upon herself to basically confront these people.”
A paparazzi’s recording from the ski trip then rolled, showing Diana marching up to him. “Please leave,” she begged, pressing her hands to the man’s camera lens. “As a parent, could I ask you to respect my children’s space?” She continued, “I brought the children out here for a holiday and we’d really appreciate the space.”
Though the photographer is insistent, and even appears to offer a deal to her, her calm plea managed to get through. Such a sweet mama bear moment!
‘Her Cheeky Laugh’
In one sweet moment in the series, Harry opened up about what he remembers most about his mom: her laugh. “I always remember her laugh, her cheeky laugh,” he said. Harry also added that she’d always tell him, “You can get into trouble, just don’t get caught.”
He continued, “I’ll always be that cheeky person inside.”The Mental Block
“I don’t really have any early memories of my mum,” Harry revealed in the first episode. “It’s almost like, internally I blocked them out.”
He does, however, remember the paparazzi. “The majority of my memories are being swarmed by paparazzi,” he said. “Rarely would we have a holiday without someone with a camera jumping out of a bush. Within the family, the system, the advice is always ‘don’t react, don’t feed into it.'”
The Panorama Interview
Harry addressed Diana’s infamous Panorama interview and gave some telling insights. “She felt compelled to talk about it,” the royal said, something he can undoudtedbly can relate to. “Especially in that Panorama interview.”
“I think we all now know that she was deceived into giving the interview, but at the same time she spoke the truth of her experience,” she said. Could this be a reference to The Crown latest season?
Princess Diana’s Legacy Lives On
In one the sweetest moments in the series, Meghan is seen holding her son Archie and showing him a beautiful black and white photo of Diana that’s hung in his nursery.
“Who is that?” Meghan asked in the home video. “Hi grandma….That’s your grandma Diana.” Safe to say Meghan and Harry’s kids will remember Diana and her incredible legacy.
They’re a Lot Alike
Also in the series, Prince Harry shared that he thinks Meghan and Diana are a lot alike. “So much of what Meghan is and how she is is so similar to my mom,” he said. “She has the same compassion. She has the same empathy. She has the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.”
The Center of Attention
In Volume II of the docuseries, Harry shared how his mom hated being the center of attention compared to all the other royals, a sentiment Markle knew all to well.
“First time that the penny dropped for her, M and I spent the night in a room in Buckingham Palace after an event where every single member of the family had been, including the queen,” Harry recalled. Even though the event was packed, Meghan was the only one gracing The Telegraph‘s front page.
“I went, ‘Oh my god,'” Meghan recalled of ther reaction. “She was like, ‘But, it’s not my fault,’ And I said, ‘I know. And my mum felt the same way,'” Harry said.
A Granddaughter-Grandma Connection
At one point in Volume II, Harry draws a similarity between his mom and his 1-year-old daughter Lilibet. “I think at the moment I see a lot of my wife in Archie and I see a lot of my mum in Lili,” he said. After calling Lilibet “very Spencer-like,” Harry added, “She’s got the same blue eyes, sort of like a golden reddish hair.” So sweet!
