Viola Davis, Cate Blanchett & More Stars in Showstopping Looks at the Palm Springs International Film Awards This Year

With a new year upon us, it’s time to declare that the long-awaited awards show season has finally begun. Starting off the season in style on Thursday, Jan 5, was the Palm Springs International Film Awards in Palm Springs, CA.

According to the event’s website, the night honored “the best achievements of the filmic year by a celebrated list of talents.” The event, produced by the Palm Springs International Film Society, is a part of the Palm Spring International Film Festival, a true celebration of the past year’s film achievements.

Among the night’s honorees were The Whale star Brendan Fraser who won the Spotlight Award, The Woman King‘s Viola Davis who won the Chairman’s Award, Cate Blanchett who won the Desert Palm Achievement Award for her work in Tár, and Michelle Yeoh who won the International Star, Actress Award for her work in Everything Everywhere All at Once, among many others.

Also honored during the big night was The Fabelmans director Steven Spielberg who was awarded the Vangard Award for his latest movie. In his speech, the Hollywood icon thanked his late parents who were his main inspiration for the movie. “Leah and Arnold are The Fabelmans‘ presiding spirits and I know they’d be pleased with The Fabelmans,” Spielberg said in his speech, per People. “Good Jewish boy that I am, that matters as much as anything to me.”

He continued, “And I know they’re holding hands across the stars right now watching The Fabelmans receive this lovely award.”
