Remember when award shows were mostly a boys club? It’s 2023, and while it still feels like that sometimes, women have been taking over Hollywood slowly but surely. There have been some frustrating snubs over the years, but this year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is making sure women are being properly honored for the 80th Golden Globe Awards.
The road to the Oscars is here, and the Golden Globes tonight have started that adventure off with a bang! Some of our favorite stars won big tonight, taking home much-deserved awards for their work in the entertainment industry.
Along with looking incredible on the red carpet tonight, these female stars over 40 stole the show with their wins (and killer speeches!) Last year, we wept without shame when Jean Smart won the award for her role in Hacks, when Nicole Kidman won for Being the Ricardos, and Kate Winslet for her killer role in Mare of Easttown. And this year, we wept again when some of our favorite stars won!
To honor their accomplishments, let’s take a look back at those who won big tonight (especially for those that missed this awesome awards ceremony!)
Check out which women over 40 won big at tonight’s Golden Globes below!
Angela Bassett
Angela Bassett made history as she accepted the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture award for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She was the first Marvel actor to win the coveted award.
“I stand here grateful for the Hollywood Foreign Press for giving me this honor along with Wakanda Forever,” Bassett said. “Grateful for my amazing team who every day each and every one of them work along with me and beside me and on my behalf each and every day. Grateful to my family: Courtney B. Vance, Bronwyn and Slater, I love you from the depths of my heart. My mother always said, ‘Good things come to those who pray.’ I see the truth in that every day as we welcome each new day as a family.”
Michelle Yeoh
Michelle Yeoh made her dreams come true as she took home the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award for Everything Everywhere All at Once. “I turned 60 last year,” she said in her speech. “I think all of you women understand this, as the days, the years, the numbers get bigger, it seems like opportunities start to get smaller as well. Then along came the best gift: Everything Everywhere All At Once.” Take it in, Michelle!
Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett won the Best Actress Motion Picture Drama award in tonight’s show. Unfortunately, Blanchett couldn’t make it to the event, but we’re sure she’s celebrating in her own way.
Jennifer Coolidge
Did someone say icon? Jennifer Coolidge won the Best Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film award for her work as Tanya in White Lotus. Her excitment was so sweet, earnest and we can’t get enough of Coolidge finally getting the attention she deserves.
