With any red carpet event, there are the ones who go all out with their looks, determined to turn every head on the arrivals red carpet; and those who don’t show. We’ve seen it with the Met Gala, the Oscars, you name it, and there’s bound to be a few no-shows, even if they’re nominated! For the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards, there are quite a few no-shows, including the one nominated actor everyone was wondering about: Brendan Fraser.
If you’ve been glued to all the entertainment news, then you already know that The Whale star said early on that he’s opting out of showing up to the 2023 Golden Globes. When asked at GQ’s 2022 Men of the Year issue, he responded as to why he’s not going to the awards ceremony “It’s because of the history that I have with [the Hollywood Foreign Press Association]. And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite,” he said.
Fraser wasn’t the only star to RSVP “No” to this show. In fact, quite a few surprising stars decided to opt out of the first huge ceremony on the road to the Oscars.
In case you didn’t notice, or want a refresh, we got you covered. Below, check out which Golden Globe nominees skipped out on the awards show this year below!
Kevin Costner
Kevin Costner let everyone know ahead of time that he wouldn’t be able to attend the 2023 Golden Globes due to the devastating floods in Santa Barbara, California.
“Yesterday we had to pull the kids out of school in Santa Barbara,” he explained in a Twitter video message. “This is the second time in five years that the freeway has flooded out, we found ourselves on the wrong side of the town and we couldn’t get back last night.”
Costner wound up winning Best Actor in a Drama Series for Yellowstone, so he has something to look forward to once the weather improves.
Amanda Seyfried
Amanda Seyfried won her first Golden Glob award for Best Actress — Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film category for playing Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout. However, she missed her big opportunity to accept her prize because she is reportedly working on “creating a new musical” that we know nothing about right now.
Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett, who just won the award for Best Actress – Motion Picture – Drama, was also absent at the award show. According to presenter Henry Golding, the actress is currently working in production in the U.K.
Zendaya
Zendaya, who was nominated for Best Television Actress – Drama Series for her work in Euphoria, is a winner, baby! The actress won her category only for us to find out by presenters Jay Ellis and Glen Powell that she did not make the event. “She’s busy,” Ellis joked. Such a shame!
Brendan Fraser
Brendan Fraser is the man of the hour this year at the Golden Globes for his spectacular performance in The Whale. He’s expected to win Best Actor in a Drama, but the 54-year-old actor won’t be in attendance to collect his award for a very traumatic reason. In 2003, he was allegedly sexually assaulted by then HFPA president Philip Berk. It makes total sense why Fraser wouldn’t want to support the organization despite their sweeping set of reforms in time for this year’s show.
Tom Cruise
Even though Top Gun: Maverick is nominated for two awards, Best Motion Picture, Drama, and Best Original Song, the Golden Globes won’t see Tom Cruise in the audience this year. After a 2021 Los Angeles Times cover story revealed that the HFPA had ethics issues and a lack of diversity in membership, he returned the three Golden Globes statues he had won in prior years. Cruise wasn’t nominated for Best Actor for his summer blockbuster, but if it hadn’t been for the organization’s spotty history, he likely would have been front and center to support the beloved sequel.
Will Smith
The slap heard around the world at the 2022 Oscars is still being felt almost a year later. Will Smith was expecting to make a return to the award-show circuit for his role in the Apple TV+ drama, Emancipation, but the entertainment industry still isn’t ready to welcome him back. Despite several apologies, it looks like Smith, along with his cast and crew, were punished with zero nominations for his poor decision last year.
