‘Swarm’
To understand what Swarm, out March 17, is all about, think Beyoncé’s beehive turned horror. “Murder. Sex. Music. This is not a work of fiction,” the official Prime Video description reads. In essence, Swarm follows Dre (Dominique Fishback), a young woman from Houston whose love for her favorite pop icon Ni’Jah (Nirine S. Brown) is taken from normal to pure obsession. The show was created by Donald Glover and even has former First Daughter Malia Obama as one of the writers.
‘Daisy Jones & The Six’
Premiering on Prime Video on Feb 3, Daisy Jones & The Six tells the story of Daisy (played by Riley Keough), an aspiring rockstar who joins a band that becomes the biggest rock band in the ’70s. The show is an adaptation of a novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The show also stars Sam Claflin, Suki Waterhouse, and Camila Marrone.
‘A League of Their Own’
Inspired by the true stories of members from the All-American professional women’s baseball league during WWII, A League of Their Own has all the heart of the 1992 Penny Marshall-helmed feature film with a whole new, contemporary attitude. The series stars D’Arcy Carden, Abbi Jacobson, Chanté Adams, and Nick Offerman.
‘The Underground Railroad’
Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins offers a completely original and unique understanding of history in The Underground Railroad, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead. The mini-series, nominated for seven Emmys, follows Cora as she tries to break free from the slaveholding deep south. Lyrical and poignant, this is a miniseries you won’t want to pass up, and one with riveting images and performances you won’t soon forget.
‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’
An Emmys darling, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has delighted fans since 2017. Starring Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan as the titular character, Midge Maisel maneuvers the world of comedy and her changing family dynamics in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s with her manager Susie Myerson (Emmy winner Alex Borstein) at her side. The series is full of whip-smart dialogue and delectable performances. The final season is on its way, so get to binging!
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’
Long before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Middle-earth was a completely different place. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, inspired in part by the Silmarillion, follows memorable characters and new ones as a long-festering evil finally re-emerges.
‘Fleabag’
Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s incisive, introspective one-woman show gets a two-season series treatment with Fleabag. Constantly breaking the fourth wall, Fleabag shares with audiences her observations on life and love as she maneuvers the world as a 30-something cafe owner in London. The first season sees Fleabag unravel, while the second features her falling in love…with a hot priest, no less.
‘Sound of Metal’
Nominated for six Academy Awards, winning two, Sound of Metal stars Riz Ahmed as a heavy-metal drummer whose life is thrown completely off rhythm when he begins to lose his sense of hearing. The quiet, affecting film sees Ahmed’s Ruben embrace his new community and struggle to create a new path for himself.
‘One Night in Miami…’
Directed by Regina King, One Night in Miami… features towering performances, biting dialogue, and moments of reflection as Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree), Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge), and Sam Cooke (Leslie Odam Jr.) spend one night in a Miami hotel together. We can never know what really happened when these four legends came together. But King, in her feature film directorial debut, captures the intimacy and urgency of each man’s legacy and what they meant to one another in this moving picture.
‘The Big Sick’
Never overly saccharine, 2017’s The Big Sick features the real-life love story between comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily V. Gordon. Nanjiani plays himself in this adaptation of the couple’s story, which sees Emily (Zoe Kazan) fall into a medically induced coma as Kumail spends time with her bickering parents (Ray Romano and Holly Hunter). It’s sweet and hilarious, mixing family drama with romance in equal measure.
‘I’m Your Woman’
I’m Your Woman finds inspiration from the crime thrillers and neo-noirs of the ‘70s in this thrilling story about a young mom on the run. After her husband betrays his partners, Jean and her baby are forced into a life of constant movement and uncertain circumstances. With the help of some allies, they just might be able to escape the danger that hunts them.
‘Cold War’
