When Princess Diana and then-Prince Charles (now King Charles III) divorced back in the 1990s, it was one of the biggest scandals at the time. However, it wasn’t unexpected. The couple officially separated in 1992, and Charles publicly admitted to his infidelity in 1994 (a la the iconic revenge dress), and then the divorce was finalized in 1996. While many royal fans took Diana’s side in the divorce, the firm she married into took Charles’ side — at least, that’s what everyone thought.

In newly resurfaced letters, it seems Diana had one supporter from the firm amid the divorce. Any guesses? (Trust us, you won’t be able to guess!) It was Prince Philip.

So back in 2003, former royal butler Paul Burrell leaked letters that were reportedly exchanged between Philip and Diana. Despite Philip trying to block the publication of these letters, they were shown to the public by Daily Mail per Yahoo. Now, in the letters, Philip allegedly wrote: “I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind leaving you for Camilla.” He added, “Charles was silly to risk everything with Camilla for a man in his position. We never dreamed he might feel like leaving you for her. Such a prospect never even entered our heads.”

And to top it off, he’d sign off the letters by saying, “fondest love, Pa.”

However, Philip allegedly did say something rather, erm, victim-blaming towards Diana, saying, “Can you honestly look into your heart and say that Charles’s relationship with Camilla had nothing to do with your behaviour towards him in your marriage?”

But the letters seemed to be overwhelmingly positive towards Diana, which is a big shock to longtime royal fans.
