Have you ever finished a show and wished they had made more of it? Wished you could follow the characters and their stories just a little bit longer? If you have, we totally get it, we’ve been there too. And although most of the time shows don’t actually continue past their official end, and you’re stuck with having to rewatch your favorite seasons over and over again, sometimes – just sometimes – the world listens and makes a reboot.
A reboot, in essence, is when a show is restarted or revived some amount of time after its first original ending. Some reboots, like The X-Files and And Just Like That…, just continue the storylines set beforehand and continue their story with the same central characters. Other reboots, like One Day at a Time, Queer Eye and The 90s Show, for example, follow the same idea of the original show with a whole new cast and central characters.
And, despite what type of reboots you’ve seen in the past, know that there are many great reboots that have graced our screens in the past few years. Among our favorites, of course, are The Office, a reboot of the UK version of the series, The Wonder Years, a modern reboot of the 80s classic, and Cobra Kai, a reboot of the Karate Kid films with Ralph Macchio.
So, in honor of The Wonder Years’ second season airing today, June 14, we’ve compiled a list of reboots that are actually totally worth it below. Happy watching!
‘The Wonder Years’
Starring Don Cheadle, Dulé Hill, Tituss Burgess and Elisha “EJ” Williams, The Wonder Years tells the story of the Williams family, a Black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama, in the late 1960s.
‘Cobra Kai’
In Netflix’s Cobra Kai, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka return to their Karate Kid characters as their rivalry reignites with the opening of the iconic Cobra Kai dojo.
‘Bel-Air’
Starring Jabari Banks, Bel-Air gives a modern spin to the Will Smith classic The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Much like the original series, the show follows the main character Will (played by Banks) after he goes to live with his rich family in the always luxurious neighborhood of Bel-Air.
‘Queer Eye’
For this one, you might want to bring some tissues. Queer Eye, starring Bobby Berk, Jonathan Van Ness, Karamo Brown, Antoni Porowski and Tan France, is a fresh take on the 2000’s classic Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. This time, watch the so-called Fab Five change the lives of every type of “hero,” from a single dad looking for a fresh start to a trans woman looking for some self-confidence.
‘One Day at a Time’
From 1975 to 1984, One Day at a Time captured the hearts of families all across the globe. Then, in 2017, the reboot did it all over again with the help of powerhouses Justina Machado and Rita Moreno. The show tells the story of a newly single Latina mom (Machado) as she raises her teen daughter (Isabella Gomez) and tween son (Marcel Ruiz) with the help of her old-school mom (Moreno).
‘The Office’
Back in 2005, the US version of The Office began, and so did its almost cult-like following. The show, in essence, is a mockumentary-style series that follows the workers of a paper company led by Michael Scott (Steve Carell).
‘Doctor Who’
If you’re a fan of sci-fi and time traveling, then Doctor Who is undeniably the reboot for you. The show, which rebooted the long-running series with the same that ended in 1989, follows Doctor Who, an immortal time traveler who travels through time and space to save the world. Next up for the role of the Doctor: Sex Education‘s very own Ncuti Gatwa!
‘That 90s Show’
During the 90s, we loved binging That 70s Show and now, in the 2020s, we’ve been given That 90s Show. Seems fitting, right? The show, which follows the same concept of teens figuring out their lives, follows the kids of the original show’s cast in one wild and unforgettable summer.
‘And Just Like That…’
Following the success of Sex and the City –both the series and the movies– came its reboot long-awaited And Just Like That… Starring Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Sarah Jessica Parker, the show follows their beloved characters as they navigate marriage, menopause, their 50s, and everything in between.
‘Party Down’
10 years after Henry Pollard (Adam Scott) quit his job working for Party Down Catering, a stroke of bad luck leads him right back to where he belongs. The reboot, in addition to reuniting the original cast, also has some incredible newcomers including Tyrel Jackson Williams and Zoe Chao.
‘The X-Files’
After nine seasons of the hit sci-fi series The X-Files, starring Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, the show hit a much-needed break. But, 14 years later, in 2016, Anderson and Duchovny reprised their roles of Mulder and Scully as their characters continued investigating the world’s most baffling extraterrestrials.
‘The Fuller House’
If you watched Full House and wanted to keep up with the Tanner family for longer, Fuller House is the show for you. The show, which includes most of the original stars including Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, Andrea Barber, Bob Saget and John Stamos, follows the Tanner family in a whole new era.
‘Battlestar Galactica’
Battlestar Galactica is considered one of the most successful reboots to this day. The show follows a crew onboard the Galactica ship under the leadership of Colonial Fleet officer Commander Bill Adama (Edward James Olmos) and President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell). Another incredible sci-fi for the books!
‘90210’
Following the success of Beverly Hills 90210, the reboot series 90210 was created. Much like the original, the show follows high schoolers as they navigated academics, dating, family dynamics, mental health and much more.
‘The Conners’
Although The Conners might not be as well-known, it’s still a force to be reckoned with. Starring Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman, the show follows the Conner family after the events from the suddenly canceled sitcom Roseanne.
‘Hawaii Five-0’
As the longest-running police drama in American television history, it’s no wonder Hawaii Five-0 got a reboot in 2010. Luckily, the show, starring Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan, was as successful as the original with the tenth season of the show ending right before the pandemic in 2020.
‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’
Inspired by Archie Comics and Melissa Joan Hart’s breakout role in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Netflix produced the series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, starring Kiernan Shipka, in 2018. Much like the original, the show follows the complicated life of Sabrina, a half-human-half-witch who has to navigate between mortal teen life and her family’s legacy, the Church of Night.
‘Twin Peaks: The Return’
Following the untimely cancelation of the mystery-horror 90s series Twin Peaks, the production resumed after 25 years with the third season of the show. The long-awaited season, Twin Peaks: The Return, continued to star Kyle MacLachlan as FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper as he continued to solve unthinkable mysteries.
