Breaking up with someone, regardless of how short or long the relationship was, is never easy. Considering your history with the person, all the people involved, and how they might feel when you say it, it’s safe to say that having that final breakup conversation is quite a task. But, no matter what, having an honest sit-down conversation talking about the split is always a must, right? Not so fast!
According to some beloved celebrities, including This Is Us star Justin Hartley, British comedian Russell Brand and One Direction’s Zayn Malik, breaking up with someone over text is totally okay too. Over the years, these stars, and many others, have joined a long list of stars who were bold enough to break off their relationships over a simple text. Talk about rough!

In Britney Spears’ upcoming memoir, The Woman in Me, the singer confirmed that her ex Justin Timberlake broke up with her over text back in 2002 after three years together. According to her, the text exchange left her “devastated,” per The New York Times. “I was comatose in Louisiana, and he was happily running around Hollywood,” she remembered.
Russell Brand
If you’ve watched Katy Perry’s documentary, Katy Perry: Part of Me, you know that her first husband, comedian Russell Brand, broke up with her over text right before she was set to take the stage. The moment, that showed Perry’s genuine reaction to the news, was a lesson in how not to deal with a breakup. “Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011,” Perry told Vogue in 2013 on whether the two kept in touch.
John Mayer
Back in 2009, believe it or not, Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer lived a brief romance. But, keeping to his womanizer ways, Mayer eventually broke things off with Aniston over a text message. “After a 20-minute phone conversation, he just said, ‘I can’t take it anymore,’ and hung up,” a friend of Aniston told Mirror. “Then he texted, ‘That’s it – the end.'” Talk about cold!
Joe Jonas
Surely providing some song lyric inspiration, Taylor Swift was dumped by none other than Joe Jonas over text. During a 2008 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the “Lover” singer revealed that detail as she referred to Jonas as “the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18.”

Selling Sunset fans unite! As fans of the show will surely remember, This Is Us actor Justin Hartley broke up with his wife of two years Chrishell Stause over text back in 2019. During an episode of the Netflix reality show, Stause explained that she received a text from Hartley telling her he’d filed for divorce after they had a fight over the phone in the morning. 45 minutes later, the news broke to the media.
Zayn Malik
Following their unexpected split two years into their engagement, Little Mix star Perrie Edwards talked about being dumped by One Direction’s Zayn Malik over text Little Mix’s 2016 book, Our World. “It was horrible, the worst time of my life,” she wrote. “A four-year relationship, two-year engagement ended by a simple text message. Just like that.” Since the claim, Malik has refuted her side of the story, saying he would never have broken up with her over text. “I just want the public to know I didn’t do that,” the singer told Fader magazine.
Reggie Bush
After dating for three years, Reggie Bush reportedly broke up with girlfriend Kim Kardashian over text. “Reggie dumped Kim by text while she was in Miami,” a source told Hollywood Life at the time, per Elite Daily. “He actually sent her three text messages that said he needed time and space and ‘it’s not you, it’s me.'”
