If you’re a big fan of Sex and the City, the series or the movies, it’s hard to believe that Kim Cattrall and her co-stars don’t get along in real life. After all, Samantha, Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte are, for many, the epitome of what best friends should look like.
Behind the scenes, however, it’s a totally different story. Ever since 2004, rumors of feuds and tension between Cattrall and her co-stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis have swirled. If you’re asking yourself why, most of it stemmed from Cattrall being vocal about receiving less money than Parker, the lead of the show. And although cast members denied the feud for years, the tension reached new heights in 2017 when Cattrall confirmed she rejected starring in a third Sex and the City film. “The only ‘DEMAND’ I ever made was that I didn’t want to do a 3rd film,” Cattrall tweeted at the time.
Then, later on, when the reboot series And Just Like That… came along, Cattrall was not invited to join. “I was never asked to be part of the reboot,” she told Variety. “I made my feelings clear after the possible third movie, so I found out about it like everyone else did — on social media.”
On June 1, however, Variety announced Cattrall would be making a surprise cameo in the second season of And Just Like That… Since the announcement, all the stars of the show have expressed their excitement surrounding the foursome’s semi-reunion despite Cattrall’s long list of conditions and requests for her appearance.
Curious to know what Cattrall’s rules were? Check out all the rules the cast and crew of And Just Like That… had to follow to avoid any drama below:
Kim Cattrall & Sarah Jessica Parker Could Not Be on Set at the Same Time
Although Cattrall agreed to do the cameo, she did not interact with any of her co-stars, including her scene partner Parker. According to Variety, the two were never on set at the same time as their characters Carrie and Samantha only interacted over the phone and so Cattrall filmed her side of the dialogue solo.
Kim Cattrall Also Avoided Showrunner Michael Patrick King
In addition to not seeing her co-stars, Cattrall also had the condition of not interacting with longtime showrunner Michael Patrick King. “Kim had two stipulations—one, that she would not act with any of the other girls, and two, she did not want to see Michael Patrick King,” a source told Page Six. As a reminder, in addition to siding with Parker throughout the drama, King also replaced Cattrall’s close friend Darren Star after he left the show after its second season.
It Had to Be a One Time Thing
After news of Cattrall’s cameo hit the headlines, Cattrall hinted that she wasn’t interested in pursuing it any further. “That’s as far as I’ll go,” Cattrall said on the TODAY Show. “I don’t think I’ll ever say goodbye to Samantha,” she continued. “She’s like a lot of other characters that I’ve done over the years. I get very emotionally attached and protective of my characters. She gave me so much and I’m so appreciative of her.”
Kim Cattrall Allegedly Had To Be Generously Paid for Her Cameo
Prior to the start of And Just Like That…, Cattrall was vocal about turning down the third Sex and the City movie because she and her co-stars were not financially compensated well enough. In fact, finances also caused tensions between her and Parker as Parker was being paid more than them.
For the cameo, however, sources are speculating Cattrall got the last laugh and received a generous payday for her one day on set. “She will have gotten a s–tload of money,” a source told Page Six. “It just shows the power of Kim.”
“They still need her on the show,” the source continued. “I’m glad she gets to be the hero… I’m sure it took a lot of massaging to make the cameo happen.”
Kim Cattrall Got to Pick Her Stylist
Before she officially joined the show for the cameo, Cattrall negotiated that the show’s original stylist, Patricia Field, would be the one to style her as Samantha. “It’s very interesting to get a call from the head of HBO saying, ‘What can we do?'” Cattrall said on an appearance at The View. “I went, Hmm, let’s get creative. And one of those things was to get Pat Field back.”
“I just thought, if I’m gonna come back, I’ve gotta come back with that Samantha style,” Cattrall explained. “I’ve got to push it. And we did!”
Samantha’s Return Had To Be a Total Secret on Set
As a way to keep the outside and inside buzz to a minimum, Cattrall’s return to the set was a total shock, even for those working on it. According to Page Six, Cattrall was a “surprise” to everyone on set as she wasn’t even on the call sheet for her day of filming at Silvercup Studios in Queens. “The crew had no idea she was gonna be inside a car they were lighting,” a source told the outlet.
