Over the years, books have been one of Hollywood’s main sources of inspiration. ‘The Outsiders’ by S. E. Hinton
S. E. Hinton’s The Outsiders is such a classic it’s even taught in schools. The story follows Ponyboy, one of the so-called “greasers,” a tight-knit group including his brothers, Darry and Sodapop, and his friends, Johnny and Two-Bit. One night, their rivalry with their enemies, the Socs, takes a turn for the worse. The novel was later adapted into the 1983 movie starring Rob Lowe, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise and many more.
‘The Help: A Novel’ by Kathryn Stockett
Starring Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis, Emma Stone and Jessica Chastain, the movie adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s The Help will have you feeling every emotion in the book. The original novel, of course, will have you doing the same. The story follows Aibileen, a black maid in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, who’s starting to grow tired of obeying her white bosses. After talking to her friend Minny, and a white young woman named Skeeter, the three decide to write a tell-all book about what it’s like to work as a black maid in the South.
‘A Wrinkle in Time’ by Madeleine L’Engle
If you’re looking for a young adult sci-fi book, look no further than Madeleine L’Engle’s unique book A Wrinkle in Time. The story follows three main characters, Meg Murry, Charles Wallace Murry, and Calvin O’Keefe, as they go on a journey together through space and time as they try to rescue the Murrys’ father and fight back against The Black Thing that is destroying into several worlds. The novel was later adapted into a movie starring Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling.
‘The Lord of the Rings’ by J. R. R. Tolkein
Although everyone has heard of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings fantasy saga, and even read or seen the movies, nothing quite compares to this illustrated version of the book. Back in 2015, it seemed like all anyone could talk about was the movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson. So, in case you were one of the few who didn’t see the movie when it came out, a special edition of the E. L. James bestseller is available right now for anyone to delve into the world themselves. The story follows Anastasia as she meets millionaire businessman Christian Grey, and they immediately feel a spark. Their relationship, however, quickly turns physical as Grey reveals his R-rated sexual desires.
