Despite being one of the biggest couples in Hollywood (and with one of them starring in the highly-anticipated Barbie film on July 21), Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes keep their relationship as private as humanly possible.
Before we get into their secrets, let’s talk about the basics of their swoon-worthy romance! Now, while many think they met while filming the 2012 drama The Price Beyond the Pines, that’s actually not the case. However, it is true that they started dating in 2011. While many people (including us for a while) thought Mendes and Gosling originally met on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines, they actually met prior! In a rare and previous interview with the Film Stage, Mendes confirmed they were friends for years prior to the 2012 film, but seeing how they work is that made them fall for one another soon after.
She said, “You never know what happens before. You can be friends with somebody and not like how they work, but obviously I respect him so much as an actor and he’s certainly upped my game and everyone else’s game.”
Gosling Requested Mendes Be Cast In ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’
In the same interview with Film Stage, Mendes revealed that Goslign was the one who helped her secure the part in The Place Beyond the Pines because he personally requested her! Gosling recommended Mendes for the role of Romina since the casting director was having issues finding the right actress for the role!

Gosling told GQ that he knew Mendes was the one while filming The Place Beyond the Pines, saying “It’s true that I wasn’t thinking about kids before I met her, but after I met Eva, I realized that I just didn’t want to have kids without her. And there were moments on ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ where we were pretending to be a family, and I didn’t really want it to be pretend anymore. I realized that this would be a life I would be really lucky to have.”

Mendes and Gosling’s daughters Esmerelda, 8, and Amada, 7, are bilingual! During an interview with People Chica, per Glamour, Mendes revealed their daughters speak Spanish and English. “Esmeralda mostly speaks Spanglish right now. It’s really cute,” she said. “She’s definitely bilingual, and it’s really important for us to make sure that she’s not only just familiar with the language, but also with the culture.”
Being a Girl Dad Made Gosling a Feminist
It’s no secret that Gosling loves being a girl dad, but he revealed to ES Magazine that being a girl dad even turned him into a feminist.
“I think women are better than men. They are stronger, more evolved. You can tell especially when you have daughters and you see their early stages, they are just leaps and bounds beyond boys immediately,” he said. “I think [America] needs a woman’s touch. I’ve always liked women more,” he said. “I was brought up by my mother and older sister. I found my way into dance class. My home life now is mostly women. They are better than us. They make me better.”

Mendes appeared to confirm that she and Gosling secretly married in 2022. In a previous appearance on Australia’s Today show, per Elle, she said: “Everyone is so welcoming here and my husband Ryan is here and we are having the best time.”

I know that it seems all very innocuous when you’re flipping through a tabloid at the doctor’s office or see a photo of a pregnant lady online, but I find the media’s ‘bump watch’ obsession to be both intrusive and stressful. So I made a decision to eject myself from it completely.”
