Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s relationship faced plenty of scrutiny since it’s beginning in 2001 all the way up until Lopez filed for divorce in August 2024. Over the years, a lot has been said about their romance and the rules they allegedly followed.
Back in 2001, Lopez and Affleck met on the set of Gigli, getting together soon after in 2002. They got engaged and were together until 2004 because of the media getting to their relationship. They reconnected in May 2021 and got engaged less than a year later, and later shocked the world with their July 16, 2022 Las Vegas elopement.
After two years of marriage, separation rumors circled in the spring of 2024 until Lopez officially filed for divorce on August 20 — exactly two years after their larger second wedding in Georgia.
Their PDA-filled red carpet moments and videos that show allegedly show them arguing at events have demonstrated all the ups and downs in their ill-fated romance and their alleged marriage rules show just how hard they tried to keep things together.
In any relationship or marriage, boundaries are important and Lopez and Affleck most certainly seemed to have strict boundaries but some of these so-called rules might have taken things to the extreme.
No Smoking Allowed!
We’ve all seen, and maybe even used, the iconic meme of Ben Affleck smoking outside and looking truly exhausted with life. It’s no secret that he enjoys a cigarette, but Lopez allegedly had an strict no smoking rule in the house.
“J.Lo loves Ben, but she’s tired of his nasty cigarettes,” a source told Ok! Magazine in 2022. “She put up with his smoking at first because it’s his only vice left and she didn’t want to be a nag, but she can’t stand it.”
“She hates cigarette smoke, and what’s worse, she’s smelling it on his clothes. While Ben goes outside to smoke now, she’d rather he not smoke at all,” the insider shared.
No Female Flight Attendants
According to Fox News, Lopez doesn’t allow female flight attendants on her private planes to this day after her then-husband Marc Anthony had an alleged fling with a flight attendant.
Only Three Drinks When You Go Out
It’s been alleged for years that Lopez has a strict “only three drinks when we’re out” rule with all her past partners, per Cheat Sheet.
No Cheating
Like any couple, these two did not want an infidelity. In fact, they allegedly almost put a legal agreement in place to protect against cheating!
According to the Daily Mail, Affleck and Lopez’s 2003 prenup — which never went into effect — included a “no cheating” clause that was added after the actor allegedly spent the night with strippers.
A source told the publication, “The prenuptial agreement is to protect both their assets and says that if they do split they keep their own money, except if Ben cheats. What she does want is for Ben to give her some guarantee that he will never cheat again.”
He Must Get Along With This Ex
Lopez and Affleck have both had their fair share of star-studded lovers, but it’s been alleged by HollywoodLife that Affleck absolutely had to get along with Lopez’s ex-husband Marc Anthony. Why? He’s the father of Lopez’s twins, and they are allegedly still extremely close after their divorce in 2014.
This seems like a resonable rule for any blended families!
He Needs To Be in Charge of All Relocation
It’s been alleged by the Marca that, in order to keep Lopez happy and blissful, Affleck is in charge of all their relocation matters when it comes to moving or buying houses. House hunting is quite stressful, but to not split the duties half and half sounds even more stressful.
No More Kids
Reportedly, Lopez and Affleck both got on the same page about not having more kids as soon as they got back together.
“They do not want any new children — they are both past that part in their lives. J-Lo’s connection with his kids makes Ben even more certain that this is fate,” a source told HollywoodLife in 2022. “They are focusing on raising them to be good adults now and the party of five is enough for them.”
No Big Tips
Lopez has long been accused of being rude to servers and one service worker even claimed she ensures Affleck also doesn’t drop too much cash.
According to a now-deleted TikTok video via YourTango, a former employee of a casino told the story about how Lopez was “stingy” with her money, saying, “[Lopez] tells [Affleck] not to tip. He doesn’t tip anymore, baby! You don’t need to tell him nothing, he ain’t doing it.”
And others alleged that if he did, she would take the big tips away from the service industry workers.
