Sadly, face-tuning and photoshopping selfies are not uncommon practices; it’s all over the internet, and so many studies have shown how it’s blurred the lines with so many people on attainable goals and facial features. But selfies aren’t where it ends, because we’ve seen them on screen and all over magazine posters; but it also doesn’t stop there. So many movie and TV posters have been heavily edited, and so many celebrity women are speaking up about it.
While we’ve seen so many stars call out the unnecessary photo editing on magazine spreads, these celebrities are clapping back at the editing done to them without their consent on promotional posters.
From enlarging breasts to changing almost every facial feature on an actress, these celebrity women are sick of the unnecessary photo editing done to them to promote their films and shows. Some have even fought with television companies to ensure no photoshopping would be done, and even won that battle!
From the stars of Pretty Little Liars clapping back at the photoshop on social media to Keira Knightley’s three-time battle with photoshopped posters, these celebrity women are not holding back!
Check out which celebrity women have called out the photoshopping done to them without their consent on movie and TV posters over the years, below:
Keira Knightley
Keira Knightley has faced movie poster creators photoshopping her breasts to look bigger not once, not twice, but three separate times. The first time happened in 2004 with the film King Arthur, where they released posters of her with much larger breasts, and then again with Pirates of the Caribbean and The Duchess.
Years later, she posed topless in protest to these photoshopping incidents, saying, per Time, “I’ve had my body manipulated so many different times for so many different reasons, whether it’s paparazzi photographers or for film posters. That [shoot] was one of the ones where I said: ‘OK, I’m fine doing the topless shot so long as you don’t make them any bigger or retouch.’ Because it does feel important to say it really doesn’t matter what shape you are.”
Ashley Benson
Back in 2017, per People, Ashley Benson called out the latest promo poster for Pretty Little Liars for being overly-photoshopped. She took to Instagram, saying, “Saw this floating around….hope it’s not the poster. Our faces in this were from 4 years ago…..and we all look ridiculous. Way too much photoshop. We all have flaws. No one looks like this. It’s not attractive.”
Troian Bellasario
And Ashley Benson wasn’t the only Pretty Little Liars star to call out the promo posters, because her co-star Troian Bellasario commented on the now-deleted post, saying, “Wow @itsashbenzo I couldn’t agree more. Very cool concept as always. But aren’t we attractive enough women as we are? Why can’t we just look like us. Once,” per StyleCaster.
Kelly Clarkson
Back in 2020, Kelly Clarkson poked fun at the photoshopping done to her for the promo shots for The Voice, saying per People, “I feel like this is what I would look like with a boob job?”
Rosamund Pike
While speaking on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Rosamund Pike talked about how her “breasts were augmented” for the movie posters for the 2011 film Johnny English Reborn. “In the poster for the character shot, I’ve got a really impressive chest. Which I don’t have,” she said, and talked about how even her eyes were changed for the posters for the film Radioactive. “There’s probably countless times where our image is doctored and we don’t notice it. Because I think we’re all losing our grip on what we really look like.”
Jameela Jamil
Jameela Jamil fought hard for no photoshopping on the promo photos and posters for the hit show The Good Place. Per StyleCaster, she said, “I just managed to get NBC to agree to not airbrush my promo photos which was really cool because normally, those photos get heavily airbrushed. I just don’t want to see that on myself, and I don’t want other people who follow me to see some sort of AI-perfect imagery of me.”
Elizabeth Olsen
So this one is a hybrid of a movie poster and magazine shoot, but either way, Elizabeth Olsen wasn’t happy with the promo photos for her iconic character Scarlet Witch ahead of the Avengers: Infinity War film in 2018. Now, Empire magazine released a bunch of limited edition covers, but fans instantly noticed how Olsen looked nothing like her usual self. In a now-deleted post, per Allure, she said, “April 27th … Does this look like me? “#scarletwitch #infinitywar #avengers.”
Ronda Rousey
Ronda Rousey was given a photo to promote her appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and she posted it, but within hours, she talked about how her promo shot was completely redone. She wrote on Instagram, “I have to make an apology to everyone – I was sent a picture from my team to share on social for Fallon that was altered without me knowing to make my arms look smaller. I won’t say by who – I know it was done with severely misplaced positive intentions – but this goes against everything I believe and I am extremely proud of every inch of my body. And I can assure you all it will never happen again. I could not be more appalled and hope you all forgive me🙏🏼.”
