Although we may not see it everyday, celebrities often use their influence, platform and even money to give back. And, during the AmfAR Gala on Sept 3, that took place during the 80th Venice International Film Festival, celebrities got dressed up and walked the red carpet for just that: to empower a worthy cause.
“We are thrilled to be returning to Venice for what promises to be a festive evening raising funds to advance our lifesaving HIV cure research,” amfAR CEO Kevin Robert Frost announced to Variety earlier this year.
As one of the co-chairs, actress Kate Beckinsale showed her support for the event on social media. “As well as getting to see the inspirational [Ava DuVernay] receive the Visionary award and the talented @ritaora and @leonalewis perform, @amfar galas are essential to winning the worldwide fight against AIDS,” she wrote on Instagram. “@amfar is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research. Since 1985, @amfar has awarded more than $600 million in [grants] to research teams worldwide . HIV/AIDS remains one of the most serious and deadly public health threats in the world. One person dies of AIDS-related causes every single minute and two others become infected with HIV. So we urgently need a cure. I support @amfar because I want to be a part ot the solution.”
“We can be the generation that brings the HIV epidemic to an end, but we’re going to need to work together and to support organizations like @amfar dedicated to finding a cure,” she continued. “We know that we can cure HIV. There have been at least five people cured, but this was through an expensive and risky stem cell transplant. Through our support we will help to fund the research that will deliver a cure that’s accessible to all who need it. 💜 #amfarvenezia #cureaids”
